Not much to add to the other positive reviews. Buddy Levy makes history come alive with a nice mix of historical retelling combined with personal motivations and detail derived from thorough research. I was drawn to this story after dong a little reading on early South America and finding that they had a robust trade of not just items, but ideas with the people of the Amazon basin. In fact, one archeologist thinks the culture of many of the people of the Andes came from the Amazon. My only disappointment with the book was the scant converge of the cultures of the tribes the explorers met along the way, but of course, they were fighting against time for their own survival. I was fascinated by this true tale of adventure and discovery.
I was fascinated by this book and would have given it five stars except for the fact that it seemed to lack an ending. It stops with the battle against the amazons but does not take us down the remainder of the river, cover what happened to the voyageurs, or discuss the importance of the expedition. Most interesting is the population density that once existed along the Amazon and the variety and complexity oif the cultures, something that archaeologists are only starting to recover. Contrast the picture painted by Carvajal with that created by Scott Wallace in The Unconquered, a story of today's Amazon people, who wander the rain forest 500 years after the cities and military capabilities encountered by the Orellana party.
Outstanding on all accounts! This is my second book by Levy and once again he has far exceeded my expectations.1) His writing style is so easy and fun to read. He draws you in and you can't put the book down.2) He writes in a very balanced way. You get to know, and like, the man Orellana. Although Levy does not white wash the problems with the Spanish colonial treatment of the Indians, he doesn't paint them all as cruel and sadistic villains that should be erased from the pages of history. In fact you come away realizing that compared to other conquistadors, Orellana was actually quite kind and reasonable.3) He also did an incredible job of researching this book. Levy is a true historian. The only thing that might have taken away from the book was the ending. It kind of just dragged on for a while. He went into the demise of Gonzalo Pizarro. Along with a brief description of Sir Walter Raleigh's exploration up the Orinoco. Although interesting to read I found them slightly out of place. But that criticism is so minor, don't let that keep you from reading the book.Hit the order button and buy it now!
I learned a lot from this book. I knew about the quest for El Dorado but I never realized the hardships that the men endured. It seems impossible that anyone would want to return to such a land, with the hostilities from animals, terrain and men. It was hard to read concerning the indigenous peoples and how they had to fight for their way of life and homes. The conquistadors were so cruel, with no other thought but to use the people for their own benefits. Now, with the new discoveries in South America of huge cities that have been covered with vegetation for ages, the history and diaries that the Spanish wrote make this book really current.
If you are into historical adventures, this book is for you. The travels and travails of Francisco Orellana and his men is a fascinating tale of exploration, hardship, and finally survival, through months of rowing and sailing down the Amazon river, meeting some friendly, but mostly hostile, tribes. Unlike many Spanish explorers, he realized discovery of the land and river was more important than finding treasure. The historical feats and defeats of Gonzalo Pizzaro, Orellana's leader, until they parted, are also fascinating. Well written, a remarkable book.
Actually what brought me to this book was my interest in the indigenous people of the Amazon area and the current archeological findings and their interpretation. The BBC presented a program entitled "The Secret of El Dorado." The program referred to Orellana's trip down the Amazon River 1542 which, while apparently well-documented, seemed to be mythical. Scientific investigations have discounted Orellano's account of large communities along much of the Amazon River due to an underlying assumption that the basic soils of the Amazon basin are not adequate to allow intensive agriculture which is the basis for large community development. Current scientific investigation reveals that indigenous peoples had develop a system of agriculture, termed "terra preta" which allowed adequate production of food for large populations. In addition, archeology has located and examined numerous areas which were probably abandoned because of the indigenous contact with Europeans as happened in North America. The second aspect of Levy's book is the historical material about Conquistadors, Spanish power, and the colonization of the Inca Empire from Francisco Pizarro to Orellano's trip down the Amazon and the fate of the Pizarro family in Peru. The workings of the Spanish government and the politics of the time are interesting historically and in comparison with current world governments and situations.I recommend this book for the above reasons.Mike Nelson
