This book is just shy of a scam. Sorry but it is just not thorough enough. Also, within the book the author claims several times that the book is advanced and goes into deeper detail than whats required to just pass the exam. That the book will also make you proficient with penetration testing. This couldn't be further from the truth. Actually in many areas of the book a concept is introduced and thats all. No examples, no how to, nothing. From middle to end of the book it feels rushed. Kind of like being in a discussion with someone who is being short with you and attempting to rush out of the restaurant. I am absolutely SHOCKED at Sybex for pushing this through. In fact, I can only assume its because the higher ups are clueless about whats good when it comes to Information Security and specifically the Certified Ethical Hacker or penetration testing business. I regret purchasing this book. It wouldn't be worth reading if it were completely free. This type of release hurts Sybex. They should step up the quality control.
The chapters have some good content, but the practice exams/tests are bad. The author isn't clear about which technically correct answers he arbitrarily decided is the correct answer. There are lots of mistakes in the book, and he ends his sentences with prepositions.
Sybex publications are always my first step in exam preparation, and I have had great success to date. However, this book is as poorly written as many of the other comments say. Chapter reviews ask question about subjects that were not covered. When I checked the index, it said that a certain topic was covered on a certain page, and it was just not there. At all. Some of the information in the book is misleading. I'm on chapter 4 and will finish the book, but I will certainly not be using it as a primary resource to pass the exam, just as a starting point and refresher.I recommend Cybrary.com for a more sound training base.Reader - Sec+, CASP, CAP, CISA, CISSP
Easily the poorest quality study guide I've used for any certification. All of the previous complaints are correct. The review questions are poor. They are not well written, many of them have the wrong answer (The answer will be marked wrong, while explaining why the answer you provided is actually right. In short the provided answer does not match up with the explanation), some of the content is wrong. In chapter 11 there was a command provided for hping that was incomplete. I found the content quality lacking. Having read quite a bit of material on this subject such as Counter Hack Reloaded, SANS curriculum, web application hacker's handbook, hacking the art of exploitation, I found this book extremely dry, with not enough to make it stimulating or even interesting. It seemed to be often just one more list of terms after another. Sometimes the lists would morph outside the defined subject of the list. For example: In Chapter 13 under Pieces of a Web Application Puzzle, the author provides a list of different ways to authenticate a user, beginning with methods of authentication, however then the author begins moving to session tracking, permissions (permissions are not used to authenticate a user but rather define what the user has access to), then in this same list about how a user is authenticated, the author further moves onto logic, data stores, application content. I don't know if I have ever given such a poor review to a book, but after chapter following chapter of this mess, I had to provide feedback.
Lots of poorly formatted errors, someone wasn't paying attention when throwing this together.Worst one that keeps bugging me is the practice questions/answers aren't matching up, i.e. A question will be labeled a,b,c,d but the answer bank in the back of the book lists them as 1,2,3,4 and they often don't match up with the original answer.
This book does not cover 100% of exam objectives. Many times i found myself going to different sources to find the answers. The chapter questions are nowhere near the difficulty of the real exam. Many testable switches, commands & concepts are not mentioned in the book. I also spotted a lot of mistakes with exercises and end of chapter questions. There's a high chance you'll be tested on many things that are not in this book, therefore I don't recommend it.
This book will not help you pass the exam, but its a starting point and a good reference. During your study, just visit this book when you may be confused on a topic. Great start but not everything
This book does a great job of actually explaining the material, especially new concepts. Goes into the right level of details
