The years leading up to the Civil War and the ones that preceded it were a time of great change in America. In those pre-days, some recently freed slaves, as well as those in bondage, were covertly and overtly expressing their religious beliefs and their political views on their condiditon of servitude. These four remarkable women were vocal in their opposition to the male hierarchy of the church, the "expected" role of women in the body of believers, and the confines of slavery as imposed on African-Americans. Such opposition to the "norm" made the women less than popular in many circles; however, they stood steadfast and eventually, through their nationwide travels, brought many to their respective church folds.Dr. Hayward showcases each woman, offering her analyses of their respective writings/sermons. There are also glimpses of the women's personal lives and the burdens their travels placed on their families.I wish, however, that the book had included more of the women's words, in contrast to the author's interpretation and explanation of them.Overall, though, it is an intriguing work that is eye opening for those with an interest in the history of the Black church.

For any Access 2010 programmer that needs to do anything complicated, this book is simply indispensable. I am only 1/4 the way through this 1200 page book and already can say it has been well worth the money. It is loaded with useful tips and code snippets that I have already put to use. The verbiage is well-thought-out and well-laid-out. That being said, I do agree with other commenters that the index pretty much sucks. In too many cases, you have to know precisely what you are looking for--not enough general help for problem-solving or "how do I...". The table of contents is much better, here, however, is not alphabetical. Despite these annoyances, I still give it 5 stars--it really is that good.If you are an (Access 2010) intermediate or expert, "Programmer's Reference" is for you. I have also read "Access 2010 - The Missing Manual", which I give high marks to. "The Missing Manual" is great for beginners to intermediates, with only a sprinkling of expert help (the index in this book is fabulous). Happy coding!

Good book, good tips, the code examples are nice and you don't have to buy the book to get the free code.

I am a beginner to programming in Access and just migrated over to Office 2010 from 2003 (skipped 2007 altogether). Although a lot of the programming examples in the book go over my head, I am able to use the book as a starting point for the direction I need to go. Somehow, I always find what I need in this book. I feel like the authors cover a lot. I have also downloaded the extra chapter content from the webpage they provide in the book and that has been very helpful to me as well. However, the best thing that has come from buying this book is that I emailed one of the authors when I was really stuck and she actually emailed back the same day! She went so far as to set up a Microsoft live conference with me to help me out. By doing this, she was able to see my database and guide me through my problems. It was pretty awesome.

This book contains useful information and it walks you through the explanations of the procedures so that you can actually understand it and customize it to fit your needs. It takes you from the basics and moves you through to more advanced topics. I bought this book because my Microsoft Access Project class uses it as a text book to teach VBA programming. It is one of the best purchases that I have ever made.

Great book, good value. Programming tips, examples and instructions very helpful, especially for a beginner, intermediate programmer. Recommend PDF or hardcopy version.

This is truly a programmer's reference but finding code and functions is not easy. Additionally, the content is more Visual Basic than using Access and it's functions.

This book has a broad overview of what's new in 2010, as well as the past technologies. While it has an element of "rah rah" because it was one of the early references that MS probably contracted to get, they don't do the usual thing where older technology and techniques are not covered. I think that MS has finally accepted that there will always be some VBA programmers on Access, and new apps will not all be created in C# using the PIAs, and programmed with Visual Studio. The only two other Access books I've read are the old O'Reilly MS Access book (the anteater?), and a book about writing MSA apps by John Viescas. When it comes to programming, larger practical examples like those in Viescas' book help, a lot. They aren't as tidy and awesome as the snippets offered by most books, but that's why they're good - they give you workarounds for things you must compromise on. Access 2010 Programmers Reference didn't have very many larger programs. What it has more of are entry level tutorials for specific technologies. Because Access is so HUGE, with many APIs, this book is similarly large with coverage of many APIs.

Pro: well written, well organized, great resouceCon: none
