A lot of these jokes are way too hard for kids to understand. I would not buy this again. And to be honest it's not very hard to not laugh because the jokes are kind of dumb.

Nigeria was 'the hope of Africa' when it received its Independence from Britain in 1960. Roughly six years later, the first coup happened, which led to the Biafran war. It was a country of some60 million people in during 1966-'67, which was when Gabriel served with his program (Nigeria XX). Children reared in generational poverty have special needs. Eric Jensen identifies those needs, explains the science behind them, and offers practical strategies for addressing them.I appreciate the value of this book so much, I gave copies of it to my principal, assistant principal, and the school district's superintendent. I heartily recommend this book for any educator who serves the needs of Title 1 students.

I have done a lot of self reflecting on my teaching philosophy after reading this text. We often think of children of poverty as being "those kids" or incapable of completing certain tasks, when in reality we have to provide additional nurturing for them, even as they reach their teenage years, because they are lacking that from a young age. I hadn't thought deeply before reading this text about the psychological development of children of poverty but this was the first of many texts on children of poverty that I will read I think.

Brain research is somewhat new and fascinating. Eric Jenssen made it understandable for someone who has no interest nor aptitude in the sciences. As a person who grew up in poverty, I could relate to much of what he said. Because of this book, I am going to change the way I do some things in the classroom. I was running things in much too an authoritative style, but that's not surprising, considering I was brought up in an authoritative household. While the first couple of chapters are kind of depressing, because it tells of the deficits children of poverty will have, the hopeful parts come next. There are things we can do to help these kids be successful. I'm going to make a presentation to my principal about this book and I'm hoping we'll do a study on it. Too many of our staff members don't seem to know how to deal with these kids and tend to marginalize them. Times have changed and they can't continue to do this. I am going to be these children's advocate. I couldn't do that without this book. :)

Our school has 47% poverty. That means that approximately half of the students in each classroom are experiencing these delays due to poverty issues beyond their control. These children may be more concerned with their next meal or where they will be sleeping at night than multiplication and reading. This book contains some of the most basic blues you'll ever play, but that's what you need at a beginning level. Some of the studies are a bit advanced and take some time to play well. In the long run you'll learn some blues lead guitar phrasing and simple rhythm that you can embellish to fit your own style of playing. This is somewhat true in my opinion. However, I think development of the "soul" has to come from within the guitar player. This is one of the best topic-specific guitar books in my library. I'm an experienced hobbyist player and found the content to be useful and fun. Be sure to download the example songs and the video lessons using the info on page 1 (note: the Zip file contains only the songs; you'll have to download the video lessons one at a time -- but they are worth the extra effort). The focus on common chord progressions plus movable chord shapes and minor pentatonic patterns provides a blues foundation you can use in any key. Recommended.

It's got some things I need to learn how to play some blues. I'm starting on chpter 14 out of 21. So far, the author works with the Em and Am scales (same scale different positions). Major scales, and using them with minor scales, are in later chapters The audio tracts with the instrumentals have very good tab notations and the sound tracks are all professionally recorded. They are on-line rather than a cd, but they can all be downloaded. I'm using one of the songs with my guitar instructer to disect it measure by measure. I need help keeping a beat throughout a song so the song tracts are especially helpful. There are also some video lessons that explain some of the proper way to finger the scales and progressions.I intend to use several of the songs to build a set that I can play at my leisure. Everyone needs to have a set of songs he or she can play well. The 4 star rating is mostly for the sound tracts and corresponding tabs. Otherwise, I would have rated the guide 3 star bcause the last half dozen chapters are close to being no more than filler pages to thicken the book.There are written lessons on 7th and 9th chords that go hand in hand with the blues sound. He uses the I, IV, & V style to intro the chords and the progressions, complete with variations. Also intros blues sixths - pretty decent sound - think slide guitar.The last 5 or 6 chapters are only short intros' on playing styles for gospel - pretty good, but hard edgy blues, hard rocker rythym and hard rocker lead - not good, This is by no means the only book I use, but for now, it's the one I'm spending the most time with studying and practicing the songs.Pros:Really good blues songs to learnCons:No CDConflicting instructions between video and book lessons.Confusing lessons (chapter 12 was so confusing to me that I had to finally skip it).Not as much material as the number of chapters imply.
