I haven't finished reading the book, but I wanted to put down my thoughts before I forgot them. I believe this story is not so much about the little girl's problems as it is about the thoughtless woman and her daughter, who came into her father's life and squeezed Lucy out of her home. The woman kept heartlessly turning the child's father against her until he felt all the tension and problems were all Lucy's fault. It wasn't. The stepmother rand her daughter eminded me of Cinderella's situation. I thought that was only a fairytale, but maybe not... Lucy was only a child, but she was made to carry a heavy burden of guilt by her family. She responded to the disrespect, lack of love and attention that she desperately needed, and indifference in the only way a hurt child can respond when continually receiving mixed messages and emotional onslaughts. She kept up a brave demeaner in the face of all the rejection. It's a wonder she didn't develop pathological symptoms. If it hadn't been for Angela and Jonathan Hart's compassion and loving care, I think she might have gone off the deep end. I hope this story ends better than my gut feeling, but I think I know what the outcome is going to be. Angela Hart is a wonderful writer. You'll be glad you read her stories because you can't help but walk away with more sympathy and compassion for the wayward children she writes about.
This was a great fostering memoir although very sad. There was no problem in Lucy's family ( except it was a single-dad household) until a stepmother and her daughter came into the picture. They took over the house, the family and for some reason targeted Lucy as the 'bad seed." Lucy had some learning issues but she was loving and generous and had talent with making things and tried her best in all she did. That a family could be ruined and this woman believed over the honesty of a an innocent child is shocking. Can you just put a child in foster care because there is trumped up tension and supposed bad behavior? This abuses the system and of course the child. Angela and her husband are dedicated carers and this book had less about them than previous ones. I felt so sorry for Lucy and wish her a happy life now that she is an adult. It was sad that her father chose a woman over his child. I do enjoy this author and this was one of her better memoirs
