If this is the writer's debut I am very impressed. Polished, seamless and engaging writing. It is so easy to love the two MCs. Crane, the rich but no pampared lord and such a hunk with the badboy hardened image and I can so visualize his perfect sexy body tattooed with magpies, lol. Stephen, sweetly endearing even if he is such a powerful magician, seemingly vulnerable but with such steely courage and determination in his calling as jury/judge/executor. These two are just the perfect couple, more so in the Victorian era where their love is forbidden. I love their chemistry and thought this is a perfect 1st book in their developing relationship. As for the plot it is just fascinating and gripping with some really spooky, magical and original scenes. The throat attack scene especially gives me the creeps! The sex scenes are just right and that last sex scene is really something!. I also have to mention Merrick, Crane's fiercely loyal and protective right hand man, who is the perfect secondary character. Very impatiently waiting for the 2nd book, A Case of Possession (A Charm of Magpies) in this series which I hope has many more books to come.
Now that I've discovered a newfound love for queer historical romance, it was really only a matter of time before I made the jump to the urban fantasy variety. This novel was an excellent introductory choice that I devoured in the space of one airport wait + flight to Florida, and I had to resist the urge to immediately purchase the rest of the trilogy (that urge has since been sated). This book took two romance tropes that I already dislike, despite being new to the genre, and delightfully turned them on their head. On the surface, Lucien Vaudrey is suicidal, and Stephen Day must "fix" him. Before I could be too irritated by this ridiculous view of mental health, the urban fantasy element quickly came into play to excellent effect. Charles could also have easily gone down the "enemies to lovers" road, but her characters' depth and maturity prevented this trope from also coming to fruition.I'm fascinated by the magic system presented in this world, and I'm eager to learn more about it in future installments of this trilogy. Hopefully, the hints of greater diversity in this book are also explored later as well. Some of the secondary characters were difficult to keep straight, but all of the primary characters had excellent voice and characterization. I look forward to following their continued adventures.
This was a very good one, with a very unusual situation and characters. There’s just so much exciting stuff crammed into this first story—magic, China, ensorcelled tattoos, the foibles and strength of English aristocracy, wonderful old houses, sinister servants and utterly dedicated ones, trying to right wrongs of the past, fellowship, friendship and love.Crane and Day are both equally interesting as people, though they come from wildly different backgrounds, life experiences and strengths. The situation in which they first meet was very unexpected, and sets up one of the book’s major themes—not judging people unheard or unknown—a theme which the author continues to play with throughout the book. I enjoyed how the magic worked, especially Day’s connection and way of using magic.I also liked the way the central conflict was resolved, and the balance Charles achieved between two very strong men. Much of the explicit sex was reserved for the last quarter of the book, which seems to be less common, but allowed Charles to create a stronger relationship between the men beforehand. That was especially important in this story as Day had issues to resolve before he could allow himself to fall. Glad this is the beginning of a series already in progress, so I won’t have to wait for more books!
To say I loved this novel may be a tad understated. It's a charming little gem of a novel and a guilty pleasure all rolled in to one. The story follows Lucien Vaudrey, recently returned to England from exile in China. Regardless of his own wishes, he has inherited his father's estate and riches after the untimely death of both his father and older brother. When he arrives home, he discovers someone is trying to kill him as well (with magic!) and he enlists Stephen Day, a magical practitioner who hates his family, to help him. Magic, hijinks, and romance ensue! So there was pretty much nothing I didn't love about this novel. Lucien is every inch the roguish playboy, with some morals (even if they are few). His relationship to his bodyguard is sweet and brotherly, and his attraction to Stephen is delightfully played and written. Stephen is a much different character. He practice magic, which is dark and interesting here, and is kind of grouchy and wary of Lucien. He's still a likable character because you are given some insight into why he is the way he is, and he develops as the book goes on. I read this book fairly quickly, as it was hard to put down. If I had to categorize it, I'd call it a paranormal/fantasy romance. Both are done well. The magic here is visceral and obviously related to the use of blood and things, though I would have liked to see it explored more than it was. I have hope that it will be further explained as I read the rest of the series. The romance is sweet and endearing and sexual, and the tension between Lucien and Stephen is well-written and explored. I would really love to see this novel as a TV series or miniseries. I'm pretty sure I'd love it. Overall, I really loved this romance/fantasy novel. I love magic and it was done well here (even if I want to know more!). I'm also learning to embrace that it's okay to read romance, and I really enjoyed that aspect as well. The characters come across vividly and I found myself chuckling and grinning at times at their antics. I highly recommend this if you're looking for a light and fun read. I'm very interested to see how Lucien and Stephen's story develops over the next two books.
