This is a wonderful and long novel about the history of Rome starting with the time when it was just road crossing, going on to the collapse of the Roman Republic about 700 years later. As the author is very well versed in the subject, the plot has an accurate historical backdrop. Indeed, the fictional elements serve mainly to give readers a painless and easily understandable history of perhaps the most important enigmas of Western history: just how did an unimportant city state become the sole power in Europe in a few centuries.Mr. Saylor describes all this is in a simple and clear literary style, so much so, that without its fictional elements, this book would make a good introductory text book on the history of the Roman Republic, even at the high school level, (assuming that Ancient History is still taught at the high school or college freshman level). However, as this book is a novel, I would add that character development is good, the plot moves along with many surprising turns and it is a very good read even for adults with at least some knowledge of Rome. I found the chapters on the conflicts between the plebeians and the patricians most useful because this is a long and complicated story well explained by the author. All in all, this is an excellent book for anyone interested in an educational history or just an engaging novel. The history of the Roman Empire that followed the end of the Republic is covered by another thick volume by Mr. Saylor, and I imagine most readers of this book will want to read it after finishing this book.

"Who could say what might be occurring at that very moment somewhere in the world... where the birth of a man or movement might alter the world's destiny once again?"The book jacket describes the book as a "panoramic historical saga," and I would agree! This is an excellent work. Such a great concept that the author chose to follow. Spanning 1000 years, the novel follows the shifting fortunes of two families through the ages. You experience the founding of a settlement along a riverbank to the ascent of a city poised to become the capital of the world. Linking each generation is a talisman as ancient as Roma itself.I think one of my favorite parts in this novel is the every-changing maps marking each chapter. Not only do you read stories of a family, but you can see the world they live in develop with each generation. I was truly in love with this journey through time. I think the best historical fiction is also rich in facts, and this book is no exception! Carefully crafted and brilliantly voice through the 549-page novel, I never lost interest! It seems that struggles for equality and political arguments and intrigue will remain uncannily familiar subjects throughout time. In Rome, these struggles permeated life through the city's growth.I also learned so much about the society. Sometimes its hard to keep historical names straight, and that's because men would commonly change their names due to accomplishments in life. Even as fathers passed down their names to their sons, the book was never confusing. I could easily keep the different characters straight.I think another favorite piece of this novel would be how events in one chapter would become legends and myths in the next. The development of the society based on character choices in each chapter was just mesmerizing and fascinating. I love exploring history, and this really took me through the development of a strong and proud people! At the close of this family's story, I felt a sense of peace had finally graced their life. And of course, their family line did not end. This book illustrates that life and love will carry us to the end of time! There are no endings as long as love endures. Sappy? Yes, but the book was truly epic! Saylor is great at penning both strong men and women characters. Loved it! This book would be in my top 10 historical recommendations!

Steven Saylor is a gifted novelist. His description of ancient Rome and its people paints a living, breathing portrait. I am in awe of his talent. And, as a confirmed mystery lover, I am delighted with the tactic of basing the Sub Rosa books around a mystery. I also love the ancient history of Rome & Greece, and could never have imagined the actual Rome as colorfully as Saylor does.It is my respect for the actual ancients and their lives that causes me some hesitation in my admiration for this book in particular. Every author has biases. It's important to know what those are. Steven Saylor's are being in favor of homosexuality and in sympathy to the disadvantaged, in this case the slaves. He writes a horridly vivid account of a galley slave's lot. Awful. So painful that his description was actually cited in the Wikipedia entry on galley slaves. That entry claims (and other googled references back it up) that war galleys of the Greeks & Romans did NOT use slaves. The reason was simply that manning the oars was a skilled job requiring trained labor. When emergencies arose requiring recruiting slaves, the enticement was the promise of their freedom. So my confidence in Saylor's research is shaken. I believe he let his prejudices against the patrician class and for the lowest of the low get away from him. In most ways, Saylor's point of view works well. Gordianus, his "detective", is free born but in no way a patrician. Most writers idealize the very top of society. Let's face it, most of us would like to imagine ourselves with servants, slaves, villas and riches of our own. Scrambling around Suburba in Rome (not to be confused with today's suburbs) is not where my daydreams would take me. Steven Saylor's sympathies with the lower classes is what may indeed give his novels such depth. However, it is unlikely that the ruling patricians were as incompetent as Saylor describes. After all, Rome did not fall for almost 500 yrs after these times. Some reviewers have objected to the homosexuality. What I have read in other sources leads to believe that it was accepted. Saylor paints a picture of a pretty rigid society. There are rules. Those rules do not apply to plebians, but they do to patricians. Homosexuality was fine if the higher ranking male maintained his "dignity." It had nothing to do with marriage, which was primarily for the preservation and elevation of the family. So I don't believe it was a problem for the ancients. And I judge that Saylor handles it well. He may have written erotica under a different name, but none of that appears in these books. Instead, Gordianus' relationship with Bethesda acts as a perfect balance. This view of rules and rigid expectations reminds me a great deal of the English and the empire they built while obeying strictly defined rules of society. There's a lesson there someplace! The other objection I've seen is that Saylor's book aren't really all that mysterious -- although some reviewers say that improves. Mysteries always favor the reader. It's not like reality, where you don't know who is important and who is not. Important characters are all introduced at the beginning, so it is frequently a simple matter to guess who is the odd man out. I guessed the perpetrator early on. Doesn't matter. The beauty of the book is in the unfolding of the story. Saylor is a gifted novelist with real depth to his stories.Regretfully, I have come late to Saylor's novels. I look forward to devouring them, one by one. Whenever you stumble across them, do yourself a favor and dive in. Just keep in mind that, like any other writer, Saylor comes with his own set of biases and beliefs.

Amazon.com Review

While the title How to Be a Domestic Goddess may at first make a modern woman bristle, the book itself is just as likely to inspire the woman who brings home the bacon to start baking cakes. And what's wrong with that? "This isn't a dream," writes British cookery deity Nigella Lawson in her preface. "What's more, it isn't even a nightmare." Lawson--the author of How to Eat, food editor of British Vogue, and star of her own TV cooking show, Nigella Bites--has been suspected of upholding the woman-laboring-in-the-kitchen paradigm, but there are lots of hard-working women out there who derive great satisfaction from cooking, even after a long day at the office. For those women, Lawson, who looks more Elizabeth Hurley than Martha Stewart, is the perfect guide to the wondrous world of baking. "You know, I'm not a cook-to-impress kind of girl," Lawson says midway through the book, but she must admit there are few things more rewarding than putting a warm homemade pie or fragrant cake on the table--especially after preparing a home-cooked meal. How to Be a Domestic Goddess: Baking and the Art of Comfort Cooking makes just such a reward possible, in fact positively enticing, with its delicious selection of easy-to-make cakes, pies, cookies, breads, even jams, presented in Lawson's chatty, pleasantly glib manner. Turns out, you don't have be a Pierre Hermé to make to-die-for chocolate confections; nor do you have to spend hours "faffing around" with hot pans and jars to have jam at teatime. You just need to try baking once, then again, and next thing you know, you'll be turning out cookies and desserts every chance you get. Many of the recipes are hand-me-downs or adaptations from other sources, be it a favorite cookbook or a restaurant in some far-off region, but all are imbued with Lawson's wit and distinctive touch. Profiteroles, My Way are "monumentally impressively better" than the original, thanks to burnt-sugar custard and toffee sauce. Her Coffee and Walnut Splodge Cookies are "American-style cookies; in other words just dropped onto the baking sheet free-form," and so on. A sophisticated female alter ego of British mop-top Jamie Oliver, and considerably more sly and comedic than most American gourmets, Nigella is sure to convince more than a few up-and-coming hostesses that baking is indeed women's work. --Rebecca Wright

From Publishers Weekly

Called "England's it girl" by Gourmet magazine, Lawson (How to Eat) brings to America her second cookbook, highly popular in England. Lawson, the food editor for British Vogue, suggests ways to feel like a domestic goddess (rather than undergo the necessary lifestyle changes to become one), taking cooks back to an era of less stress and more simple pleasures. The recipes, written in Lawson's characteristic lively, witty manner, encourage this theme. The Store-Cupboard Chocolate-Orange Cake will please the nose with its rich, intense aroma and indulge the taste buds with its full chocolate and orange flavor. The Coconut Macaroons seem soft and chewy with a concentrated coconut essence (though they may need to bake for slightly longer than the suggested 20 minutes). The chapters cover categories from cakes to pies and from chocolate to Christmas. One chapter includes recipes for kid foods as well as recipes that children can follow. The book is designed to instill confidence and capability, positing that if Nigella can make these delights with ease and in a relaxed manner, so can anyone else, "trailing nutmeggy fumes." The beautiful color photos set the mouth to watering. (Nov.)Forecast: Timed to launch with her television series Nigella Bites on the E! channel and Style networks this fall, this book will bask in the warm, fuzzy and competent glow of Lawson's renown. She'll be a hit in the U.S.; her book will get ample promo and fly off the shelves.Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

I have always loved Nigella Lawson's recipes. So I bought this book for my cousin and she loves it.

I love this cookbook, and its great author. I have tried several recipes already, and they turn out great. Just be sure to get the Chatto & Windus (London) published edition with metric measurements (and convert on your own if you need to) as the chatter is that the US edition has had poor conversions and inconsistent results.I can't wait until I am finished with my diet, so I can try out a few more recipes !!

The book is great. Its delivery was lacking. Delivery person did not bring it to house but left on road in the rain. Fortunately book was not damaged.

Two pages were peppered heavily with splashes of what looks like chocolate batter otherwise ok.

I love this book; and I don't care if you've never baked in your life, or if you never bake a single thing from this book, if you've ever been comforted by baking, or cooking, you'll love this book. It's not an ordinary cookbook. It's not for grabbing when you need to throw together some last minute cupcakes for your kids' school bake sale. It's for when you have time alone, and you curl up in your favorite chair, with a steaming cup of tea, or a glass of good red wine, and you savor it...like you would a very moist, very chocolate, homemade piece of warm chocolate cake with melting, creamy vanilla ice cream on the side. Highly recommended!

I have to give 4/5 stars because while I love this book (it is very informative and absolutely full of awesome recipes), some of the recipes are more confectionary (like cinder toffee) but the instructions are lacking. I'm sorry, but you can't tell me to boil sugar until it's x color and expect my toffee to turn out. Confectionary requires temperatures, which this book is severely lacking.

The absolute perfect book for the creative baker. Nigella gives ideas for different variations and always identifies which areas of the recipe can be played with and which can't. There is so much stuff jam-packed in this book that I can't see myself ever getting tired of it.Embarrassingly enough, I couldn't find anything that I didn't want to try, so I just started at the beginning. The Easy Almond Cake was a favorite at my house, as well as the Victoria Sponge Cake (both the zucchini and the fruit version). I can't wait to try the Lavender Cupcakes. The quality of the book itself is unsurpassable. I love the glossy pages and the beautiful photographs. Nigella always seems to take such personal care in her work, that it's like having a friend in the kitchen with you. The only problem I have with this book is that it doesn't fit into my cheap cookbook holder. If, like me, you can't decide which you'd rather do more, eat one of Nigella's cakes, or hang out with Nigella herself - yet you balk at some of her entrees (I initially had Nigella Bites but exchanged it for this one) - this is the book for you.

I've been a big fan of Nigella's cooking shows and I could only hope that her books would have the same whimsy, voluptuousness, and pure gastronomical joy as expressed on TV. Domestic Goddess was my first Nigella-book purchase and I have not been disappointed. You can practically hear her voice as you read her recipe directions and food descriptions, i.e., "ice this pileup of gorgeousness." The photos are beatiful, the paper thick and glossy. Nigella is, indeed, my own goddess of the kitchen and I'm happily collecting the rest of her books.

I was boning up to preach Exodus this year and started trying to absorb a very large commentary. It bogged me down. So I reached for Sarna's "Exploring Exodus" which is a manageable 220 pages and I got great insights more quickly, so now I feel better prepared to dig deeper in the larger commentaries. Sarna has a high view of Scripture.

This is a commentary on the book of Exodus by the Jewish scholar, Nahum M. Sarna. Each chapter deals with large literary units rather than the typical verse by verse exegesis. His focuses mostly on historical and cultural backgrounds to the narrative's setting drawing upon a broad knowledge of the ancient Near East. In fact, this was the book's strength. You won't find raw theology here nor will you be left with simple historiography but rather what Sarna calls historiosophy.

Excellent commentary from a renowned Old Testament scholar. I am a Christian pastor and have been helped tremendously by his insights.

Easy to read and packed with insights. This book keeps your attention while delivering interesting scholarship. Accessible!

The best realistic honest book on Exodus that is properly Historical as possible. It details inconsistencies but retains the Sacred, holy, and revolutionary moral transformations.

Great book

This is very clearly written, and a great resource to consult. (This comment is regarding the Kindle version). Definitely worth the price.

From the Back Cover

Devil Take the Hindmost is a lively, original, and challenging history of stock market speculation from the seventeenth century to the present day. Edward Chancellor traces the origins of the speculative spirit back to ancient Rome and chronicles its revival in the modern world: from the tulip scandal of 1630s Holland, to "stockjobbing" in London's Exchange Alley (where wine sold at auction by an "inch of a candle"), to the infamous South Sea Bubble of 1719, which prompted investor Sir Isaac Newton to comment, "I can calculate the motion of heavenly bodies, but not the madness of people". Here are brokers underwriting risks that included highway robbery and the "assurance of female chastity"; credit notes and lottery tickets circulating as money; wise and unwise investors from Alexander Pope and Benjamin Disraeli to Ivan Boesky and Hillary Rodham Clinton. From the Gilded Age to the Roaring Twenties, from the railway mania of nineteenth-century America to the crash of 1929, from junk bonds and the Japanese bubble economy to day-traders of the Information Era, Devil Take the Hindmost tells a fascinating story of human dreams and folly through the ages.

Ah, the oft-asked question: "How long will people keep buying the lipstick-painted pigs that others are selling?"Until they don't. And that is what lies at the center of fear and greed, humankind's great motivators. (Not love and hate. Those are just variations on the same theme.)Chancellor does an admirable job of making an incredibly boring subject human, emotional, and funny (my apologies to those who think finance and markets are super interesting—out of context they are, but relative to most other things in life, they aren't). But let's get back to what matters, Chancellor's book. He makes the subject interesting by bringing the greatest manias in history alive—tulip mania, gold, the South Seas bubble, and railroad stocks, among other more contemporary bubbles and manias.Entertaining and highly recommended if you like history and psychology. Chancellor skillfully brings to life the psyches of the speculators as well as accurately portraying the social and political landscapes that existed when the bubbles began.A similar book with some overlap but a somewhat different tone and style is Manias, Panics, and Crashes: A History of Financial Crises, Seventh Edition.

Absolutely the single best history of financial speculation. Chancellor seems to have assimilated just about everything one could on all the major speculative episodes, from ancient origins through the 1990s.There's not much else to say. If you're an investor, this is a must-read history of how things can go horribly wrong in financial markets. In fact, with U.S. equities bumping against all-time high valuations (in mid-2018), this is the perfect moment to take your time and read through this book. It'll show you all the ways you might be getting swept up in speculative excess, of which you might not be aware, even if you're invested in the greatest businesses that have ever existed.World Dominating Dividend Growers: Income Streams that Never Go Down

As you contemplate the rise and rise of China's planned economy, consider this passage from an anonymous bank official:"We intended first to boost the stock and property markets. Supported by this safety net - rising markets - export-oriented industries were supposed to reshape themselves so they could adapt to a domestic-led economy. This step was then supposed to bring about an enormous growth of assets over every economic segment, followed by an increase of investment in plant and equipment. In the end, loosened monetary policy would boost real economic growth."Sounds about right, doesn't it? There's just one catch....The official being quoted is not a Chinese central banker circa 2011. He is a BOJ (Bank of Japan) official circa 1988.And we know what came soon after for the Land of the Rising Sun - a toppling weight of speculative mania collapse, coupled with a truly spectacular misallocation of resources and the dead weight of "zombie banks," that hobbled Japan's economy for decades running. The above quotation is one of the many cited in the excellent "Devil Take the Hindmost: A History of Financial Speculation" by Edward Chancellor.Having first read "Devil Take" many years ago, but never having reviewed it, we were inspired by recent events in China to pull it down from the bookshelf and reexamine the chapter on Japan. The similarities - China now, Japan then - are notable.Japan in the late 1980s, like China now, was a booming command and control economy. Officials at the all powerful Ministry of Trade and Industry (MITI) and Ministry of Finance, via the power of back channels, chose how to steer "Japan Inc." at will.Further evoking China, Chancellor observed of the Japan bubble that "speculative mania is often a symptom of hubris," with great manias tending to occur "when the economic balance of power is shifting from one nation to another."As Chancellor describes the late 1980s scene,"America was on the run. While Japan had its trade surpluses, America faced growing trade deficits. The Reagan administration also produced enormous budget deficits that were only sustained by the willingness of Japanese investors to sink their country's trade surplus into U.S. Treasury bonds..."As Yogi Berra might quip, re Japan vs. China, it's "Deja Vu All Over Again."Or perhaps "Nobody invests there anymore, it's too overbought."Those timely parallels aside, "Devil Take" is an engrossing book that traces the roots of financial speculation all the way back to Roman times. Thanks to Chancellor we learn the Latin meaning of the word speculator: It originally applied to sentries, whose job it was to "look out" (speculare) for trouble. Ancient Rome's financial players, on the other hand, were known as "quaestors," or seekers. And the quaestors had much to seek. Chancellor reveals that two millennia ago there were joint stock companies with thousands of employees (slaves), public accounts, and even joint shareholder meetings with differing classes of company shares. One wonders if there could have been rough-hewn J.P. Morgans and Jesse Livermores of the Roman age.Human nature was certainly the same. As Petronius Arbiter wrote of the Rebublic's final years,"...filthy usury and the handling of money had caught the common people in a double whirlpool, and destroyed them... the madness spread through their limbs, and trouble bayed and hounded them down like some disease sown in the dumb flesh."Thus beginning with ancient Rome and the origins of financial speculation, Chancellor then takes an erudite journey through the forgotten touchpoints of speculative mania history - from "stockjobbing" in the London boom of the 1690s, to John Law and the South-Sea Mississippi Scheme, to the "Fool's Gold" of the 1820s and the Railway Mania of 1845.The book then covers speculation in the Gilded Age, and rounds out the 20th century with a look at the crash of `29 and the go-go 1980s (via cowboy capitalism and, last but not least, Japan).Needless to say, pollyanna permabulls will not much like this book. But for those with a natural contrarian streak and an acquired taste for the "dark side" (i.e. going short), "Devil Take the Hindmost" is a delicious and informative romp. The lessons of speculative mania are clearly a warning to unrestrained bulls, but they hold an important message for bears too: Manias can be quite dangerous, fatal even, for those who stand in their path without yielding. The persistently recurring nature of the episodes Chancellor describes - and the ability of froth to reach incredible heights - is great testimony to the old J.M. Keynes warning: "The market can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent."
