Amazon.com Review

Fully revised and beefed up with plenty of new material on today's Standard C++, the new edition of Bruce Eckel's Thinking in C++: Volume I is an excellent tutorial to mastering this rich (and sometimes daunting) programming language, filled with expert advice and written in a patient, knowledgeable style. The effective presentation, along with dozens of helpful code examples, make this book a standout. The text first sets the stage for using C++ with a tour of what object-oriented programming is all about, as well as the software design life cycle. The author then delves into every aspect of C++, from basic keywords and programming principles to more advanced topics, like function and operator overloading, virtual inheritance, exception handling, namespaces, and templates. C++ is a complex language, and the author covers a lot of ground using today's Standard C++, but without getting bogged down in excessive detail. The emphasis here is on practical programming, so there's basic advice on using header files, preprocessor directives, and namespaces to organize code effectively. Each chapter ends with exercises (usually about two dozen), and the entire text of the book is available on the accompanying CD-ROM. (So is the second volume, which tours Standard C++ classes and other advanced topics.) Whether you have read the first edition of this book or not, there is much to mine from Thinking in C++. This new version continues to set a high standard as an approachable and thorough tutorial. --Richard Dragan Topics covered: Introduction to objects, inheritance, composition, polymorphism, exception handling, analysis and design fundamentals, advantages of C++, transitioning from C, compiling and building programs, writing C++ functions, flow control, C++ operators, data types, casting, debugging tips, pointers to functions, designing reusable C++ classes, conditional compilation and header files, access specifiers, constructors and destructors, function overloading and default arguments, using const and static effectively, inlining, namespaces, references, copy constructors, operator overloading, using new and delete for dynamic objects, virtual functions, abstract classes, introduction to templates, and iterators.

Review

"This book is a tremendous achievement. You owe it to yourself to have a copy on your shelf. The chapter on iostreams is the most comprehensive and understandable treatment of that subject I've seen to date." — Al Stevens Contributing Editor, Doctor Dobbs Journal "Eckel's book is the only one to so clearly explain how to rethink program construction for object orientation. That the book is also an excellent tutorial on the ins and outs of C++ is an added bonus." — Andrew Binstock, Editor, Unix Review "Bruce continues to amaze me with his insight into C++, and Thinking in C++ is his best collection of ideas yet. If you want clear answers to difficult questions about C++, buy this outstanding book." — Gary Entsminger Author, The Tao of Objects "Thinking in C++ patiently and methodically explores the issues of when and how to use inlines, references, operator overloading, inheritance and dynamic objects, as well as advanced topics such as the proper use of templates, exceptions and multiple inheritance. The entire effort is woven in a fabric that includes Eckel's own philosophy of object and program design. A must for every C++ developer's bookshelf, Thinking in C++ is the one C++ book you must have if you're doing serious development with C++." — Richard Male Shaw Contributing Editor, PC Magazine

Bruce Eckel's book very thoroughly covers the Standard C++ programming language. It may be a little dated (my copy says (C) 2000), but I don't think the Standard has evolved since his writing. The Good: Bruce does a terrific job going into gory detail on all aspects of this (let's just face it) complicated language. C++ has lot's of traps and ditches to offer compared to C# or Java, and if you plan to use a lot of the advanced concepts of the language, a helper like this book is almost indispensable. If you are coming from the C realm, this books is a real hit: Bruce constantly points out the subtle differences between C and C++, and also explains how C++ is a safer language than C in almost every facet. The book does a fairly decent job in going from the simpler to the more advanced concepts, though a few times he has to use constructs that will only be covered in later chapters (Bruce does point out these outlooks though appropriately). If you are really into learning a new language, the Exercises at the end of each chapter are a terrific way to learn the new concepts. The Bad: The text within the chapters is not very well structured. If you later on try to find something, the prose form of the sections does not really help you doing that. Also, the Index is not that great either. Often times you are sent to pages that just marginally address the keyword, and the essential introduction or explanation of the keyword may not be in the index at all. My real gripe though is with the practicality of the examples. While I previously stated that the Examples by itself are a great way to learn the languate, a lot of his examples are just plain bad ideas how to code. I understand where Bruce is coming from, he tries to find examples for all the subtleties he just covered in the section. Nevertheless, he often asks for pretty bad things to be implemented. On principle, from my own personal experience a lot of the special cases of the language are hardly ever used in real life situations.I do recommend this book, especially if you are coming from C. Just take the examples with a grain of salt. If you are a seasoned software developer, you can probably tell anyways which of the examples or techniques should not be used on the job.

And you thought giving away a book for free on the net was stupid?Bruce Eckel took the courageous step of making his C++ book available on-line, but this book is so good that he still made a fortune out of it. How? First of all from the visibility it got and secondly because there are people (like me) who wouldn't trade the pleasure of holding a good book in their hands with simply staring at a screen. So, go to Bruce Eckel's site (just make a search for his name, you cannot miss it) download the book and code and decide for yourself if you are happy with the e-edition or want to buy the paper one. Either way do read it!You will get a through expositions of C++ syntax and inner workings, with explanations of why things are the the way they are. I especially liked the discussion of how virtual functions are implemented which isn't really essential to use the language but it does give more depth to your understanding and mastery of the language. If you need an even gentler introduction I would advise to buy either the 97 edition of Herb Schildt (another C++ master) "Teach yourself C++" which you can get used for about $ 1 on amazon or Ivor Horton (the clearest and most patient teacher I have ever read from) "Beginning C++" which will give you and exhaustive tutorial even on the "c part".A couple warnings:1) You should have at least a basic knowledge of C before reading this book.2) This is a book on the core part of language, not on a particular compiler or platform. So you won't find info on Borland C++ or visual C++ .NETThe only issues I have with this book are:1) The typesetting on the book is the same you have on the html edition (quite crappy) and for book that costs more than 30 bucks this is unacceptable.2) Solutions to selected exercises are available but "for a small fee". Come on Bruce!

First... Thank you Bruce for having the courage to make yourbook available for free in HTML format on your web site ... >. Besides having your purchased book on my desk, when traveling I can printout a 30 page chapter for the trip.Second... The book is an excellent tutorial. The ingredients of a good technical tutorial include many samples in the chapter with problems at the end for practice and reinforcement. The material must be written in a style that is easy to read, and encourages one to 'come back to the book.' Eckel's book does all of this.Third... The book must serve as a technical reference when done studying. This is tougher to answer. For what Bruce focuses on, it is an excellent technical reference in a mid-sized book approximately the same size as Stroustrup's book. A complete technical reference with examples and sample problems on C++ would probably be a 5-volume set. Eckels book is not this, nor did it try to be.Fourth... Many people may find lots of fault with this book because it doesn't do enough of this or of that. C++ is an object oriented language (OOL) that is part of an entire family of skills/activities/business requirements. There is systems analysis (OOA), software design & architecture (OOD), the unified modelling language (UML), the art/pain of project scheduling estimation. To weigh down a tutorial book on C++ with these other subjects would support your plan for converting that third bedroom into a C++ library.Gripe... More then a year ago (now==15Mar01), you indicated both a volume one annotated solutions guide would be available, and volume two would be produced. Tick Tick Tick... where are they?

About the Author

David H. Stern, born in Los Angeles in 1935, is the great-grandson of two of the city's first twenty Jews. He earned a Ph.D. in economics at Princeton University and was a professor at UCLA. In 1972 he came to faith in Yeshua the Messiah. He then received a Master of Divinity degree at Fuller Theological Seminary, did graduate work at the University of Judaism, and was active in the Messianic Jewish movement. In 1979 the Stern family made aliyah (immigrated to Israel); they now live in Jerusalem. Dr. Stern authored the "Messianic Jewish Manifesto". His highly acclaimed English translation, the "Jewish New Testament," restores the New Testament's Jewishness. His "Jewish New Testament Commentary" discusses the many Jewish issues found in the New Testament. His fresh translation, the "Complete Jewish Bible", expresses the unity of the Tanakh ("Old Testament") and the B'rit Hadashah ("New Testament"). This outstanding, scholarly work offers Bible readers a thorough, biblically Jewish version of God's word.

I am a pastor and I like collecting Bibles of various translations this is one of my favorites.

As a teenage "Catholic", I was looking into the protestant faith because I didn't understand why the Roman teachings influenced the Catholic Church so much. I recently discovered that I have some Jewish Roots as both of my grandparents on my mothers side(which died while I was young) were Jewish and my mom was a convert to Catholicism which I never knew. I set out to read more about being Jewish and whatnot and discovered that it is a beautiful religion and even started talking to my parents about attending a synagogue. I then contacted a Orthodox Jewish synagogue and they explained to me that I was already Jewish and that I would just have to be circumcised and whatnot else. I had a bad feeling about going to a service and on that same day as I was doing some research I came across Messianic Judaism. It combined my belief in Yeshua and in Atonai. I proceeded to read about how it came to be and what it was and I discovered that it was a beautiful religion and so I began to search for an appropriate "messianic" bible to compare to my parents Catholic Bible(NRSV–CE). I bought this bible for that purpose and the translation is beautiful and I like how it includes Hebrew names instead of the translated English names. It has helped me a lot on my path. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Yeshua bless you.

UPDATED REVIEW/RATING:29 Aug 2017 - I've had this now for over 3 weeks, I am more and more disappointed with the Kindle version (understatement!). It can literally take at least a minute or more to find a specific verse of scripture. First you go to the "Contents" in the front (easy), then scroll over to the specific book you want, and tap it. That will take you to the very beginning of the book. In longer books with long chapters, you will literally be hand-scrolling, page by page, until you get to chapter and verse. That's just unacceptable for anyone wanting to use this as a reference. If all you want to do is read the author's outstanding information in the front, and then read the entire Old and New Testaments (Christian terms), this will be just fine. But to cross reference anything in this Kindle edition is functionally impossible - the effort required is simply unacceptable. I had given it a "gift" of 4-stars (content itself is definitely a 5-star rating), but after considerably more use, I'm probably still overly generous in downgrading it to a 3-star product. I'm almost tempted to attempt a full refund of the Kindle edition, except that I still want to have it available on my phone or Kindle device when it's not convenient to carry around a hard copy. I will definitely (and grudgingly) pay twice and purchase the hard copy of the book just so I can adequately use it when I've at least got access to the printed copy.===== Original review follows =====DARN! I wanted to be able to give this a better review. Content-wise, I love it - totally a 5-star item, particularly for the price. The fact that this is a single-translator's work is already a built-in acknowledgement by the author, so anyone knocking it down because of that I think would be unfair. If they simply disagree and can support that disagreement with substantial portions of translation, or with some doctrinal issue or other, so be it. I'm simply saying that yes, it would be nice to have more than just David Stern's view of things, but I'll certainly defer to his expertise over mine any day - not even close. The content is extremely helpful, and perhaps some background could help explain this review. I happen to be one who grew up in a Protestant denomination, kept going by choice for several years into my early 20s, but by about age 22 I'd simply not been able to reconcile several very fundamental questions and finally decided there is a God (though I did not understand his character - I've just always known that deep within even as a small child), but that the Bible was mythology just like Greek,Roman, or Norse mythology, and Jesus Christ was a great teacher and bold man, but when he died, he died as any other man does - and that he was not the Son of God. I sought out a religion that resonated with me, and could find none for several years. Only after several years and both highly unexpected and very powerful personal events did I come to know that I had been largely wrong. Each of the above suppositions on my part, starting around age 22, had been wrong. But the neat thing was, the questions I had have all been answered in greater detail than I ever expected possible. And it's been building now for over 40 years. Then late last year we became acquainted with a Messianic Jewish couple, and have had some marvelous discussions. In the process, I've come to identify with them and understand how they are not - in the usual sense of the word - "Christian." Oh, of course they believe that Jesus Christ was in fact the Messiah, but the differences with traditional Christianity (Protestant and Catholic) are amazingly similar to my own, even with no Jewish background on my part. Am I ready to begin attending a nearby Messianic Jewish service each Saturday? No. The specific denomination I accept is entirely satisfactory for reasons not appropriate for a review. So I came to order this item as a direct result of some YouTube videos produced by a Messianic Jewish Rabbi and his occasional reference to the "CJB." A little research finally explained what that was to which he was making passing reference. And I ordered it, to help better understand my own beliefs - and what a help it has already been in only a week!So why not a 5-star review (which my gut wants to give it)? Simple. Trying to navigate around in it to find "chapter and verse" completely eluded me for the first week. I JUST found out how (and it's not all that good) before completing this review. I finally found out how to find each of the books, but it's quite cumbersome having to scroll forward a page at a time to get to a specific verse. Chapter 47 verse 25 of some book? That's a heck of a lot of scrolling! I'd love it if someone could show me the "dumb" error of my ways, and provide an easier way, but for now, I'm stuck only being able to go to the first page of whatever book of scripture I choose to read or reference. To me, that's a major downfall, and my 4-star review is ONLY that high because of the exceptional explanatory and reference material prior to the actual scripture text. Trying to read this on my Android phone and do cross-referencing quickly is (so far) impossible with any kind of reasonable time. My KJV Bible? Piece of cake! This? Functionally useless for that purpose at least. It's a bit easier on the big desktop with a mouse, but still not easy. If the table of contents at least had chapter reference links under each of the book names, that would be far, far easier. For a study reference, I believe that's a major flaw.

My kids and I have been reading this Bible for several years and it is absolutely amazing! We read some scriptures in other versions as well but with most scriptures we prefer this one! We've learned some Hebrew from it and prefer to use the Hebrew names that are written in this Bible. We've also learned about the 7 Feasts of ADONAI from the back of this book and which scriptures to read on the Feasts and Sabbaths. This Bible is translated into English from a Hebrew perspective. It has some Hebrew words that are explained in the back of the book. If you want a deeper walk with Jesus Christ - Yeshua HaMashiach, I highly recommend this Bible to help you on your way! Our Savior is Hebrew! HalleluYAH! Praise YAH! â€

Regarding this version (as in the contents) of the Bible:This is an excellent Bible to own. The wording is more relaxed and natural when compared against the NKJ or other "old English" versions but it doesn't go to the extreme of paraphrasing like the Living Bible. (As a sidenote, I think that the Living Bible is a great introduction Bible for children or youth groups because of how simplified the concepts are. But you'd definitely want to upgrade to a Bible like the CJB for a more in-depth experience.) It's translated directly from the original languages instead of from another translation although some words and most names are not translated. A few examples: You'll read Yeshua instead of Jesus, Yochanan the Immerser instead of John the Baptist and Ruach Hakodesh instead of the Holy Spirit. Luckily there's an explanation at the beginning as to why this was intentionally done and a dictionary at the back to translate these terms.Regarding this printed book:This is a hardback "book" without any of the classic indentations or tabs which allows one to easily locate books. You can always purchase tabs independently. I have seen the CJB in other formats including the "classic" Bible look: black leatherish cover, soft backed instead of hard backed and the pages gradually indent to display the book abbreviations. The other formats are not sold on Amazon at the time of this review. I am not sure where to purchase it. Your local Christian bookstore should be able to order it.Regarding the Kindle version:I bought the Kindle version of this book. Unlike normal books that you read from start to finish, one usually jumps around in a Bible. Especially during religious services. It's very difficult to navigate to a specific verse in the Kindle version. I honestly don't recommend it because of that.

I'm so glad I bought this journal!! It was so nice relaxing on the beach every morning writing about our adventures from the day before.

Loved having this on our honeymoon!

Lined pages with a date space on the bottom. Plain and boring.

Basic, exactly what the product looks like. Blank pages and a basic journal!
