Lippard articulates the web of connections that profoundly describe what nature has become, and how humans continue to plunder the future of the planet. The images that support the text are great, and she includes the facts that matter but they don't bog you down. It's an important document of now."Pessimism of the intellect and optimism of the will"-that's it in a nutshell. Of course, there's no giving up.

Another thought-provoking book by Lucy Lippard, a most original thinker and art critic. She establishes a dialog between the appalling facts of land (ab)use in America and the way many artists have addressed those issues. Along the way the reader is taken from gravel pits in the mythologized Great American West all the way to the Ground Zero 9-11 memorial in New York City. It may seem like the "wild ride" of the title, but the author holds firmly your hand (and your mind) through it. Thoroughly enjoyable -- and you'll learn a lot of new things as well.

Stuart Woods writes a good book and Stone Barrington is a good character. There is action, plot twists, romantic interests- everything that a great story-line needs. Two problems- 1) Repetition; every book is the same! By the 3rd or 4th book you can anticipate what's going to happen next because you've read it all before, only the names change. And 2) Not very realistic. Every book, his trusty sidekick Dino (who is a Lieutenant in the NYPD) can take unlimited time off from work to travel wherever Stone has to go; Every case Stone handles he doesn't want any part of but is forced to take it on one way or the other; the unlimited flow of money (At the beginning of the first Stone novel he was so broke he didn't know how he was going to pay his bills; a few chapters in he gets a 'windfall' and there is no looking back); if you are looking for something entertaining to just pass some time, something that requires little thought or imagination this is a decent option. If you want to be engaged and gripped by a book this is not something you would enjoy.

Stuart Woods, in my opinion, writes very sophmorically, in that his main character, Stone Barrington, has the weakness of a teenager when it comes to the women he encounters. He can't keep his pants on, to put it bluntly, and the sex has NOTHING to do with the plot. In this case, the bad guy does have it out for him and his partner, because he was put away years before. The bad guy, as a trustee while in prison actually gets to leave the prison under the pretext of buy office supplies. I was mostly astonished that the author would even suggest this possibility. Why did I keep reading this tripe? Boredom makes you do stupid things, I guess.

I have been following the Stone Barrington series, reading them all in sequential order, one right after the other. I do have to say that this book is not like the others thus far. I did not read this book with the passion to finish it because it was great. Instead, I wanted to keep reading it just so I could finish it and move on. It seemed to drag too much on Stone's personal life, which ended up not even having a real significance in the end of the novel. Take away all of this "mush" and the book still had the Stuart Woods mystery, suspense, and thrill. If reading the series, definitely read it, because you will miss out on a lot, but it is not one of my favorite Woods' novels.Stone Barrington lives a life we all want! He is a handsome cop-turned-lawyer, very good suspense in this novel is erratic. You find yourself hooked Woods has all the right ingredients: sex, murder, etc. They just weren't mixed together well to create a great novel. Makes a great summer read.

I say any one looking to get hooked on a character that keeps stories getting deeper and different THIS CHARACTER STONE BARRINGTON Is the one.Again the ending was quick and left me trying to find the next book in the series. There are enough to keep me hooked.. there are out in cd's as a bundle. Wish the kindle books were offered that way.Might have to go paper backs to purchase the whole series today.Cannot wait to find the next adventure STONE BARRINGTON is going to take me on. Start with his first book and you will be hooked . I make more time to read since I got hooked on this series.Best adventure... suspense....warm and loving in adult fashion.Looking for kindle book 6.

Disappointed that I hadn't read two minutes and already a huge error. The character apparently forgot over the Spring that the love of his life had another man's baby which was a GIRL, not a boy as stated in the opening sentences. Anyone proofread the books before publication?

At the end of Swimming to Catalina, Arrington gave birth to a 7 pound baby girl, but in Worst Fears Realized that same baby was a boy, an error that the editor should have caught. Otherwise, a very exciting read.

Stone is back. In this book he is feeling sorry for himself and Arrington marrying another man. Dino talks him into a party. Where he meets someone goes back to her and while he leaves to get dinner and comes back she is dead. That is just the start now someone is targeting Stone's and Dino's family and friends. As these two race against time can Stone and Dino find who the killer is. As always Stone makes me laugh and even lust for him in these books. As again I love this series and will read more of this series

If you like Stuart Woods's writing and characters, you won't be disappointed. They're great for escapism, and they're page-turners, but there's really nothing that you haven't seen many times in his stories: everyone succeeds well at what they do, every character has either a trust fund, a divorce settlement, or a huge inheritance. No one lacks for money or means, and Barrington has no trouble getting laid. But if you enjoyed one of these books, you will enjoy all of them.

 After reading and greatly admiring Lisa Pliscou’s attractive and enchanting biography of Jane Austen’s childhood in Young Jane Austen, I was delighted to learn that she has published a picture book biography for elementary grade students titled, Brave Jane Austen: Reader, Writer, Author, Rebel. In this charming and comprehensive book, Ms. Pliscou highlights many of the significant events in Jane Austen’s life: such as her education, writing and publishing efforts, and the men in her life.Weaved into the story are historical context and expectations for a young woman who lived during Jane Austen’s time. In a subtle yet direct manner Ms. Pliscou shows many examples of how Jane Austen was brave and a bit of a rebel! I greatly appreciated seeing a portrayal of Jane Austen that accentuates her bravery. For she was indeed courageous, independent, and forward-thinking. Through this tale young readers, who are used to our modern rights and freedoms, will be able to grasp how during Jane Austen’s life it was unique and almost unthinkable for a woman to have a profession, write novels, or remain single. While there might be an aspect or two of Jane Austen’s life that young readers may not understand, hopefully this will prompt them to ask questions and engage them in conversations about Jane Austen’s life and times.The watercolor illustrations by Jen Corace splendidly enhance this inspiring retelling of Jane Austen’s life. This was one of two books I checked out from the library to share with my young sons, who are budding Janeites. I wanted to read them first so that I could have images and maps ready for them the next day, as they love tracing her whereabouts on the map. Thank goodness I DID read beforehand, as the book itself contains factual, cultural, and historic flaws. I did not note each flaw on each page, as I returned the book the next morning. However, the authors should review the circumstances around the publication of Northanger Abbey AND should read much more broadly in the periods before, during, and immediately after to see how female authors really were received and perceived.

I just love the illustrations in this book. Simply...beautifully done! And Jane's story is inspiring.

I am not sure if the other reviews are real; I was shocked to find that the book was so shallow....not much reference to the ancient philosophy! Lots of unreferenced "facts".

This short book provides a fine guide to those who have an interest in stoicism,a philosophy that emphasizes reason over emotion.The author gives several exercises to foster the stoic attitude, a viewpoint that recognizes"it could be worse" and "this, too, will pass" apply to many of our personal crises.While accentuating the positive is always a plus, there is a place for practicing"negative visualization," looking at bad scenarios and picturing oneself as not beingupset by them, but handling or enduring instead.Maintaining a journal seems useful, so does occasionally imposing discomfort on ourselvesto toughen up a bit. (Add these to my To Do Eventually list.)Being mindful can't hurt. Ditto examining your life's purpose, meditating, being prudentlygenerous, and keeping a sound body through exercise (perhaps even martial arts).Some research results are cited to buttress the author's claims.If you already know a lot about stoicism, this book is not for you,but for beginners and the curious, it is a winner.

Do not read this book if you have seriously studied philosophy. This book is actually psychology and specifically close to cognitive behavioral therapy. Although helpful if you are in need of psychological help, it still does not go far enough to really make a difference. It has no depth.

Perhaps I'm being unfair to only give four stars. I felt that the book left me wanting. But it is supposed to be an introduction, so that is understandable. It's a good introduction.

Not an in depth source of information. More of a basic approach to living stoicism and how to learn stoicism. Could be good for beginners.

This is the authors view on how to practice the Stoic way of life. I was looking for the direct quotes from that period in history. The direct quotes let you come to your own conclusions rather than the concept of this book. Please understand this is just my opinion and from my own personal viewpoint.

I am a 40 year veteran elementary reading teacher, and this book confirmed what I have always believed - LET THE STUDENTS READ SILENTLY EVERY DAY, AND GIVE THEM CHOICES! I am changing how I teach reading because of this inspirational, common sense approach to teaching reading! So glad I bought it! I'm sure I will be rereading it a number of times in the next few years! New teachers....fill your classroom with books of all genres and levels - go to used book stores, flea markets, yard sales...buy them on Amazon... your room should look like a mini library! Find out the interests of your students and find books that fit those interests. And lastly, read your own book while they are reading theirs! I can't wait to see the results in my own classroom! Although Donalyn Miller writes with the middle school teachers & students in mind, there are great ideas to be gleaned for high school teachers and students, too. Much of the book is spent on explaining the "why and what" on the issue of reading and I wish there was more concrete "how" explained to give guidance on implementation in high school classrooms.I bought the Kindle version and I really wish I had the paper copy version. There are helpful figures of questions and student responses, but due to formatting issues, they break in awkward places and I can't see the text very well on the figures and illustration in the Kindle version.

Donalyn Miller has years of experience inculcating the joy of reading into her sixth grade elementary school students, and Miller’s The Book Whisperer: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child shows teachers and parents how they can get their children excited about reading. Her thesis is that children should be able to choose books they want to read and be given time to read them in school.In chapter 1, “There and Back Again,” Miller tells the story of how she became dissatisfied with the whole-class novel and switched to reading workshops. Miller tells how she created materials with challenging questions and activities for the novel her class was reading together. Unfortunately, though, students spent little time reading and way too much time answering questions and doing activities. The result was boredom, which students associated with reading. She abandoned this approach and switched to reading workshops in which students chose books from the classroom library and read them during class. In this way, students can read interesting, level-appropriate books. Most importantly, though, they will read much more.In chapter 2, “Everybody Is a Reader,” Miller describes the three types of readers: developing, dormant and underground. Developing readers haven’t yet learned to read fluently at grade level. Dormant readers can read at grade level; however, they haven’t yet found the joy in reading. Underground readers, on the other hand, love reading, but they see no connection between the books they love and books they read at school. Miller shows how the whole-class novel hurts all of these students and how reading workshops helps. As I read the descriptions and examples of these types of students, I could identify them in my own classes and the desire to switch to workshops grew within me. In the vignette following chapter 2, Miller explains how to create surveys and use the results to recommend books students will find compelling.In chapter 3, “There’s a Time and a Place,” Miller argues for giving students time to read during class. She starts by giving students 15 minutes and gradually builds up to 30 minutes. Miller claims that if students read in class, they are more likely to read at home. Miller is not advocating independent silent reading in which students read with little or no guidance or feedback. On the contrary, Miller advocates an array of interventions for assisting students in choosing and reading level-appropriate books they enjoy. That is, Miller advocates scaffolded silent reading (ScSR).In chapter 4, “Reading Freedom,” Miller explains how she assists students. First of all, she has high expectations of her students. She requires them to read 40 books, along with a minimum number of books for each genre but giving students the freedom to choose what they will read. By giving students such a high goal, they are bound to read much more than they have in the past. In fact, Miller says that those who read the required 40 always read more, usually more than 50! Next, Miller empowers her students with the 10 rights of the reader. Then, Miller clearly explains how she attracts student interest through read-alouds and book journals, which she uses to communicate with students about their reading.In chapter 5, “Walking the Walk,” Miller implores reading teachers to regularly read children’s novels in order to become good models, give students good recommendations, and better understand their students. She recommends children’s books throughout her book, and appendix A provides readers with the “Ultimate Library List,” a list of 100 books recommended not by Miller but rather by her students.In chapter 6, “Cutting the Teacher Strings,” Miller questions traditional reading activities and recommends alternatives. For traditional teachers, she shows how they can make slight modifications in their procedures to improve learning outcomes. For brave teachers who can defy tradition, she explains how to achieve course objectives while allowing students to choose books and providing them with time to read them in class. Furthermore, Miller offers superior alternatives to traditional comprehension tests, book reports, reading logs and round-robin reading.In the final chapter, “Letting Go,” Miller laments that the vast majority of teachers do not take her approach to reading. As a result, her students have to go back to traditional reading classes when they move up to the next grade. She wishes that more teachers would inculcate the love of reading into their students instead of inundating them with worksheets.The Book Whisperer should be read by parents and teachers who want their children to read a lot more. Parents will feel more confident in motivating their children to read. Teachers will feel more confident in creating the conditions for learning and enabling their students to read more than they have ever before. I read this book in one night, on a whim. As someone who has been bogged down by required reading myself after finishing a degree and trying to slog through pages of our newly adopted curriculum, this book was like a breath of fresh air. Or a visit from an old friend. It was also a challenge to read. Be prepared for your paradigm to shift and your world to get rocked. I am that teacher who has faithfully taught the whole class novel year in, and year out. I didn't notice "the wallpaper" on the wall. I'm so excited to get my students reading and do the 40 book challenge with them! How important to rediscover the things that make us love reading, the freedom of choice. Great book! Every teacher needs to read it!

She definitely makes a convincing argument for providing more time for students to read self-selected, high-interest books. I was hoping for more "instructional" advice, ideas for implementing writing standards using their books, how she takes grades, how she draws on their books to create whole class learning experiences (she starts to talk about this at a few different points and then shies away from it), etc. Perhaps I had the wrong expectations for this book as it was almost exclusively an argument with the author's personal experiences with a select number of students about students having more time to read self-selected books independently. Not a waste of time to read it - I did get several great ideas, I was just hoping to get more information from an instructional stand point.

The concepts are well thought out and accessible to the willing.Currently I have to design systems that include database objects and I can already identify things I will need to improve based on the knowledge found within these pages.If you hang out anywhere near databases then reading Data Modeling, A Beginner's Guide will greatly improve your understanding of your environment.A good value that I am glad I own. I recommend it without reservation.So now let me get back to my data modeling tool to finish my Entity Relationship Diagram for my design, and use what I have learned to fix what I broke.

Usually I prefer the hard copy for technical manuals, but in this rare case I recommend the kindle version because the font in the printed copy is way too small. What that done to save money on paper, or just for the "lulz"?

I lost my original set of the 16 books of this series when I moved to another state. I was heart-broken to say the least. Thanks to the sellers on Amazon I have replaced every book atvery reasonable prices.Thank you Tim LaHaye & Jerry Jenkins for bringing this series to us. I have read several ofyour books in this series at least three times. With each reading one sees more and more andunderstands so much more of what the Gospels are teaching us. I also have their book"Are We Living In End Times"......this book may have been published in 2000... but for the 27 %of the Gospels that we don't spend time to study about...it's astonishing how much of this bookreflects the world today in 2013. A MUST READ ALSO to have in conjunction with the Left Behind Series.

This book from the Left Behind series was a bit draggy compared to the first four. It was still good, but I found Ray a bit out of character, his rage just didn't seem to fit my image of him. Other than thosse two things, the story line was very good and by the end of the book left you wanting more. I'm also getting a bit frustrated with the character Chaim, feel that his obstinance is getting dragged out a bit too long and just doesn't strike me as realistic. However, I loved the visualization of the horses and riders and the destruction they wreak. All in all, a good read, and looking forward to the next in the series.

Having just finished the 6th book in the "Left Behind" series, I thought overall this installment was pretty decent. LaHaye & Jenkins create motives for enough characters to keep you guessing right up to the last page who will be the Antichrist's killer, and even then they leave it with an almost soap opera like cliff hanger.My only beef with this book is something that's just problematic in a serialized novel format:I don't honestly believe the main characters are in danger of dying before the last book. That means a bunch of peripheral characters are brought in for a scene or two, and then die, or are killed. Characters it's hard to have much attachment to.However, I enjoyed this "chapter" in the series much more than the last, and if you're a fan of the book you won't be disappointed.

Assassins starts off slow just like the all the other Left Behind books. I find that the first 200 pages is just filler. The interesting part of the first half, is the rising of the horde of 200 million demonic horsemen. They slay a third of the population which leaves only half of the world's original population. The Tribulation Force tries hard to keep themselves unrevealed to the Global Community as they also have to deal with each other. As Nicolae prepares for a "global party," Rayford is feeling tremendous rage against all the appose the word of God. I went straight through the last 100 pages in a few hours. As Nicloae's party in Jerusalem starts, the book really begins, and it is hard to put down.

This book is certainly as good as the first book Left Behind. You simply can not turn the pages quickly enough during the last 50 pages. Of great concern was that the book was going to end too soon thus leaving the reader feeling taken advantage of - "cliffhanger to make you buy even more books."Fortunately there was enough content in this book to make it enjoyable even though it did turn into a cliffhanger which requires the reader to purchase the next book. It is unfortunate that we must wait another 6, or more, months to read the next in this series.I realize the need to do this since it increases profits - but for those who love this series, myself included, it is a painful wait.I enjoyed seeing more scripture from Revelation in this book and thought the author's views on the middle chapters were insightful.To any that might have been disappointed in book 4, which I was, this will wet your appetite for the series again, as did the 5th book.

The Left Behind series is one of the best I've read in a long time. I am now on book 10, and there aren't too many series that will hold my attention like this. Although in some places the author could have shortened up the scenes, it's still very exciting and hard to put the books down.I read on the Kindle, and the author has nice sub-breaks within the chapters making it easy to say, "I'll read one more section." Before you know it, you are several chapters later.Fun read!

I've read and recommended this series to a number of friends since the first book came out. However, Apollyon and Assassins do not begin to equate in quality with the initial books. I have read other reviews saying the "cash cow" has come into play here and I regret that I must agree. With the upcoming movie of "Left Behind", I felt that the authors were writing Assassins more as a screenplay than a novel. Please Mr. Jenkins and Mr. LaHaye, return to your prior quality writing. The movie rights will take care of themselves as will the screenplay! Leave the "who-dun-it" theatrics out because it just cheapens an otherwise invaluable series of books.

Wonderful continuation in the left behind series. A must read. Start from the Left Behind, No. 1 and make sure to read all the books in the series. They are very enlightening, each time you read them, you will find something that you might have missed in the last reading. I have highlighted all the quotes from the Bible and checked them with my own Bible. Very good

Fiona is just such a sweet girl and the staff who got her through should feel so proud.For her first birthday I took my niece to the Cincinnati zoo to see Fiona - this year I’m giving her the book and a hippo charm for her 2nd birthday, she may not remember our adventure, but we can relive it through this sweet story for years to come.

Have followed Fiona, since as a premie, she entered our world at 29 lbs; now a little over a year old weighs over 800. Her chance of survival was not good but with excellent care she survived. Thane Maynard, with the Cincinnati Zoo, wrote this book. There are great pictures of Fiona's progress. There are other books written about Fiona; however, I wanted to wait for Thane Maynard's to be published. Fiona makes history at the Cincinnati Zoo and Thane Maynard, for many years, is a vital part of the Cincinnati Zoo. I knew his book would be good and it is.

This is a wonderful book that tells the story of how this premature hippo was able to survive and thrive due to the loving care and support of the amazing Cincinnati Zoo staff, veterinarians, NICU nurses, as well as some scientific help from the National Zoo in Washington. Fiona and her story have captured the hearts and minds of the public and this is a true feel good story in an otherwise contentious and chaotic world. I love Fiona! ❤️

Very cute book. Fiona’s early beginnings are fascinating and heartwarming. I hope an adult book is released about her progress!

My granddaughters name is Fiona @ that is why I purchased this book. The other reasons is the quality & photos throughout this book. This will be a favorite of hers for years to come. We even bought her a stuffed hippo to sit with her when the story is read to her. Happy with my purchase.

My granddaughter has actually visited Fiona several times and we have videos of her reacting to Fiona in the water tank coming up to her and her squealing with delight. She loves this book. I babysit her and she goes through the book every day and gets excited.

I adore Fiona and so does my granddaughter! Love this book and the colorful photos that accompany this sweet story. I would recommend its purchase.
