Review

"Leitch makes his case, and provides a structure through which any crime film--and, really, any film with a criminal, victim, and avenger--can be studied. Such a structure is never more valuable than now." Erik Lundegaard, Film Quarterly"No film critic writes more clearly, in a style unencumbered by jargon. Even the photo captions are unusually perceptive and amusing. Highly recommended." Choice

Book Description

Focusing on ten films that span the range of the 20th century, Thomas Leitch traces the transformation of three figures common to all crime films: the criminal, the victim and the avenger. He shows how the distinctions among them become blurred throughout the course of the century, reflecting and fostering a deep social ambivalence towards crime and criminals. The criminal, victim and avenger characters effectively map the shifting relations between subgenres, such as the erotic thriller and the police film, within the larger genre of crime film.

This is a horrible book. I'm using it for a current college course, and I totally despise it. Some if it is because I hate to read, but the main reason I hate it is because it was written for someone at a scholar level in this particular subject. However, this is for an introductory course. I'm sure someone who is into crime films would really like it, but it's just not for me. Maybe I should be giving this review to the professor who assigned it. In terms of quality and shipping, Amazon lived up to its name....as always.

A scholarly analysis of Hollywood’s (and America’s) love affair with crime films, and the complex, contradictory messages they send (crime does not pay, crime is heroic and glamorous, etc.), and what the genre says about American society: Do we crave law and order, or do we admire rebels and rule-breakers? Do we actually want both to exist in some carefully balanced tension that goes back at least to the Old West? Leitch writes in a very straightforward, easy-to-read style.

An interesting but not easy read .Unfortunatly too much has happened since this publication which has jaundiced our view .I wonder how the author would now edit this publication .

Have just finished The Most Dangerous Man in the World. Though it was published in March last year it maintains a historical integrity which in unusual for "quickies". Fowler's research is impeccable. There is clearly much to admire about Assange but he is a complex character. Fowler reveals and examines these complexities in a way which is at times admiring but still critical. The book is in keeping with Fowler's ABC TVs Foreign Correspondent program broadcast in October, 2011 which revealed some of Assange's weaknesses and heralded several attacks from Assange sycophants . You can't help thinking they do him no good at all. Having read most of the WikiLeaks books this one rates as the best. As a book end I'd recommend Assange's " unauthorised autobiography" which also gives a great insight into one of history's most intriguing characters.

"The Most Dangerous Man in the World" is one of a spate of Julian Assange biographies and tell-alls published in 2011. This one hails from his native Australia, written by Andrew Fowler, a journalist with Australia's ABC network. He begins with Julian Assange's childhood, takes us through his youthful hacking days, then his participation in the cypherpunk mailing list and movement, and on to university. It is about 50 pages in before we get to 2006 and the founding of WikiLeaks. Nearly 120 pages are devoted to the events of 2010. This book was published in March 2011 and includes information through February, so it was pushed out quickly. Too quickly.Like most books about Julian Assange and WikiLeaks, it suffers from carelessness with fact, a dearth of meaningful information, and a general vagueness. There is too little reliable information on which to base a book. More information has come to light since publication that makes it look like Andrew Fowler was too quick to judge Assange -namely information about Daniel Domscheit-Berg and the full text of Bradley Manning's conversations with Adrian Lamo. But that's the overriding theme of Fowler's book: Judging Assange. Fowler seems to admire WikiLeaks' work, with some reservations, but he never misses a opportunity to criticize Julian Assange, often about trivial matters.Biographies by authors who dislike their subjects are distasteful and lack insight. Andrew Fowler just doesn't like Julian Assange. He always interprets Assange's behavior in an unflattering way, even when it doesn't seem to imply much of anything. He is too trusting of Assange's critics, as if he never considered that they have their own agendas in representing their relationships with Assange the way they do. Some of them have personality problems. They tell interesting stories, but these tales must be taken with a grain of salt, for heaven's sake. Fowler admits that Daniel Domscheit-Berg "was having difficulty with the truth" at one point. Given the inconsistencies in his accounts since then and the events of August 2011, it should be clear that Domscheit-Berg's stories about his time at WikiLeaks are not reliable. But Fowler took them at face value in spite of red flags.Fowler even imagines faults that don't exist: He claims that it's "extraordinary that an organization that is so paranoid about its security" should have a PO Box in Melbourne. Why? He claims that "Assange was also given to boasting about his various relationships." He was accused of boasting about his children. Julian Assange has never talked about his relationships with women. He claims that Bradley Manning "had been pushed to one side by Assange and felt increasingly isolated." That's a malicious fabrication. We now know why Manning sought out Lamo and others online. He was looking for someone from the gay community who had computer skills, and he saw Lamo in a documentary. Most of "The Most Dangerous Man in the World" reads like a catalog of Julian Assange's faults, both real and imagined. There is nothing wrong with scrutinizing Assange or giving consideration to the opinions of his critics, but it is strange that a biography would give priority to its subject's flaws, some valid and some specious, while barely mentioning the man's strengths. Assange has, after all, managed to publish a great deal of information that is of public interest on 6 continents over the course of 5 years. He is charismatic, thoughtful, and bright. He inspires intense loyalty in some people. He is one of few people to offer a political perspective on the digital age. There is more to Assange's character than dysfunction, obviously. You wouldn't know it from reading this book.It written to the level of perhaps an 8th-grader and gives the impression of being dashed off. There are some odd errors. Fowler gets a couple of names wrong, and he misunderstands what Daniel Domscheit-Berg stole from WikiLeaks. Fowler seems to find Assange's political ideas confusing and so pays them little attention. So is there any reason to read this book? It contains interviews with Birgitta Jonsdottir and one of Assange's ex-girlfriends that I haven't seen elsewhere. Apart from that, there is nothing new, and the coverage of old stuff is not detailed. On a funny note: The Australian edition of the book has no subtitle, but the American has two. On the title page, it's "How One Hacker Ended Corporate and Government Secrecy Forever." On the dust jacket, the subtitle is " The Explosive True Story of Julian Assange and the Lies, Cover-Ups, and Conspiracies He Exposed". The publisher changed its mind.

This is slapdash journalism at its worst. The author obviously wrote this in haste to capitalize on Assange's notoriety before it inevitably runs out of steam. The publisher shamefully pushed this on the buying public without judicious editing, either the book's substance or its copyediting. Avoid.

Joel Deane from The Australian Book Review calls Fowler's book the 'best book written about Wikileaks...'Deane wrote...What Assange may have been talking about is contained in by far the best book written about WikiLeaks: investigative journalist Andrew Fowler's The Most Dangerous Man in the World. Fowler's book comes up with a number of exclusives about the Australian government's hands-on approach to WikiLeaks and Assange. In May 2010, Fowler writes, the Australian Federal Police delayed Assange's entry through immigration at Tullamarine Airport so that Immigration staff could file a report on the WikiLeaks founder's travels:"He'd been picked up by what is known as a Stop Alert. It involves a polished act of deception. The trick is to tell a person who is on the watch list that there is something wrong with their passport ... When the passport is taken away it is photocopied - providing a list of every country visited that still stamps passports, and there are many of them. Linked with electronic records of travel, it gives a near complete record of a person's cross-border movements. This information might have been of little direct use to the Australian Government, but in the United States there were people who were far more interested."[...]
