I used this guidebook on my trip through the Dominican Republic in May 2015. Before buying it, I checked out the lonely planet 2014 guide from the library for several weeks and was unimpressed. I found the information in the rough guide more culturally relevant than the lonely planet version. It feels like the authors actually lived In the DR and have a deeper understanding of the culture. The book also saved me in a pinch when I needed last minute information on how to get from Santo Domingo to Punta Cana. I would recommend it for independent travelers who want to get to know Dominican culture.

I'm glad I bought this God and have since found this one the only ones available in the most current one on the Dominican Republic. I do wish I had included a current map. This book will not really be helpful if you were driving in the Dominican republic. I also wish that it had more for information about getting on the country using local transportation or using the ferry to go from Sabana de Le Mar to Samana. You can take a ferry across the samana peninsula for the equivalent of four US dollars and this will save great time rather than driving on what can be roads very different than what American drivers would be used to. I also highly recommend reading up on using local transportation called gua guas which will get you from town to town for the equivalent of one US dollar.I also do not recommend the Bavaro hostel in punta Cana. I do recommend the tropical village chalet in las Galeras and the Dominican treehouse village in Samana.

The book is pretty good, lets me know about all the towns and places for review, but fails to ultimately impress. I'm in Dominican Republic now and frustrated by the organization of information. I almost wish I had bought the lonely planet because I love their book design and layouts. But I went with rough guide so I wouldn't have the same book as everyone else traveling...Overall it does its job and gives good info,but could do a better job.

Still looking for a guidebook that is better that just researching on the internet. I would say this one is a good start if you have never been there before, but not a cover all. Skim through it then research spots you are interested in online to find out about changes.

This guide is written by someone who actually visited the island. How do I know? Because we visited soon after, and the details published in its pages could only be written from first-hand experience. An excellent guide for anyone visiting DR for the first time!

Not as informative as i had hoped (or depended on). Not enough maps. Not enough information to navigate as a solo traveler not booked in an all-inclusive resort.

Not nearly as good as other travel books I've used. The maps were useless & the info not well organized. Very disappointing.

It did not have derail on punta cana where I am going but overall o very good book for traveling.

Of inherited rebel blood, Michael Walsh’s father, Patrick, had fought in four conflicts before reaching his fortieth birthday. As a 16-year old guerrilla, a reward was placed on his head by England’s Black and Tans. He fought also in the Irish War of Independence, Spanish Civil War, and World War Two. Once again Mike Walsh offers a title on a subject that I have been hungry to learn more about, and with his usual style of "just the facts from the source" , in this case first person accounts of the sad and painful fall of Rhodesia, he delivers. Though the message delivered is not for the faint of heart, accounts of terrorist butchery of innocent peoples, a stand down order given to the patriotic soldiers, and the betrayal of western governments will put you back in your chair with contemplation of your own future. Through Kissinger's pressure put on South Africa to isolates Rhodesia, the nation builders, no different from the stock that built the United States or Australia, where put out to pasture and forced to watch their nation crumble under the authoritative and revengeful black rule. Mike's book shows how the capitalist west and Communist Nations worked hand in hand to destroy sovereign European rule, which brought prosperity to every region of Africa they settled, and to replace it with chaotic exploitation. After reading this book one can not help but to see the parallels taking place in our First World nations today. I step out side, look at the ground beneath my feat, that my ancestors labored on and defended from Indian attack some 350 years ago and think the invasive Marxist and invading cultures that wish to undermine and remove my progeny must be stopped before it is to late. In many parts of America "Remember the Alamo!" is still a battle cry, well I say "Remember Rhodesia!"

Apart from the disgraceful lack of factual information, the use of other people's work and the strange insistence on some sort of Jewish Banking cabal that is apparently taking over the world. Apart from all of that the thing that angered me the most is that this man cheapens the deaths of my friends and brothers to push his ridiculous ultra right wing fallacies. He has nothing to do with Rhodesia and I doubt he ever visited the place. He seems to think he has some claim of kinship with us because his father was IRA. We may have rebelled against Britain but many of us will support Britain any day over any other country or group.

Not value for money..

I lived 5 years in Rhodesia with my parents and went to school there. The author is factually correct. The negative reviews are probably from communists or socialists who refuse to acknowledge the unholy mess brought upon Africans by external political influence. Rhodesia, Angola where I was born, Mozambique, South West Africa, all were mere pawns in wider global geopolitics... Africa is too resource rich to be allowed to prosper on its own...
