I have read, in recent memory.Okay in all honesty I expected this book to be a shallow polemic along the lines of some of the "popular" authors today, pushing an agenda and setting up straw man arguments, to provide an illusion of balance. Bloom, never backs down or even bother to set up "illusory" counter theses to further his, he just piles on the examples, historical as well as contemporary to nail his indictment of the vapidness of modern "Higher Education."His thesis that the university today, reflects the general detachment of American society from the Puritan moral values that were paramount throughout American history, is conclusion that I would not have put together. Is this book dated? When I started reading it I would ha e said yes, but as I digest the matter I have just completed, I see in myself the same sins of "culture" and value relativism that he sees as the symptom of the deconstruction of a Liberal education. As a engineering graduate, I hear in my own thoughts of a "superior" education that had very little of the messy humanities as part of my experience. I see that attitude as a shortcoming after reading Bloom, and one that sadly will be difficult to correct. Not that I am going to give up my technical high-paying career to become a philosopher, but I will now be forced to read and reread the very authors that Bloom uses to bolster his argument that it is those questions about values and the role of Man in relation to everything else that is important.I found myself lost in a sea of ideas that I really had not considered at times and Bloom has the tendency to be over pedantic at times. My lack of depth to fully critique his philosophical and historical arguments provides hope that perhaps I will broaden the depth of my literary and historical perspective as Bloom suggests is the failing of my liberal education.

G.K. Chesterton is famous for the following paraphrased quip: "An open mind is like an open mouth; its function being to close upon something solid." To the extent that the truth of such priceless wit could be distilled into a single book, Allan Bloom has written that book. And time has been a friend to it.The book presents and reads like the kind of existential revelation that you'd think could only be found at the top of a mountain, or under an apple or Bodhi tree. From its exaltation of American democracy's founding principles in the spectacular introductory chapter to its implausible deconstruction of the rock 'n' roll music genre (a kind of rhetorical cousin to Richard Weaver's tirade against jazz) to its lengthy discussion of the university, "Closing" pries open your safest intellectual proclivities with a crackling urgency. But take my advice: read the Afterward first. It does a valuable - for many young readers, I suspect *vital* - service of painting contrasting pictures of Bloom's era in which he first wrote this and the era that defines us today. The context will help, though it will be no substitute for the body of the book.

I am only about 145 pages into this book, but all I can say is that this is a must-read if you want to understand what is happening in the U.S. today. Bloom lays all this groundwork in 1987, which makes it all the more remarkable since many of the things he discusses have since and even recently come to pass, from our self-absorbed individualism to the use of patriotism as an ever-shifting platform for social indigence. A very thick read. You'll want to go through it like a textbook. But I must say, if I had started out highlighting passages, much of the book would now be yellow as I have shared so much of it with others.

I would recommend this book highly. It is interesting as a well-written polemic by someone who is not a mere, crass political commentator. It is a fascinating discussion of the history of Western philosophy. It is also an engaging discussion of what Bloom sees as the problems with modern higher education.I was introduced to Bloom as a masterful translator of Plato's Republic. Bloom's thesis is that university's don't teach well anymore, because of what he describes as vulgar and lazy form of Nietzschian relativism. To make this point he first describes the symptoms of modern students. He then traces the development of Western philosophy that brought us to Nietzsche. He ends by explaining how a vulgarization of Nietzsche bred the sort of vague academic doctrines, most neatly described as various forms of critical theory, which he thinks do not serve the students of Universities. What this work is, is a refreshing polemic against relativism. What this work is not, is a work of political commentary, though some have described it as such. There is nothing here approaching doctrinaire Left- or Right-wing thought (even of the late eighties, when it was written). Bloom deals with politics but does not move too much beyond Tocqueville's Democracy in America. The analysis of students is not particularly original and would read like a diatribe of an old-fashioned guy but Bloom's ability to explain this with philosophy. The history of philosophy section is the middle of the book is also its intellectual center. One might not agree with all of his characterizations (of Nietzsche, especially), but it makes for a good analysis and will at least inspire one to read and re-read those older works. The final part deals with the university, and partially rehashes the history with special application to the development of the modern university. This is perhaps the weakest part of the book, only because the arguments had already been built up, and are fairly implicit in the first two thirds of the book. Some have commented on the book as being difficult to follow because Bloom swerves off topic. I do not think that is fair: Bloom never forgets what he is writing, though he often adopts an ironical tone to illustrate a point, and since this can go one for a few pages, one might forget whether one is reading Bloom's exposition or his mocking of some theory of which he does not approve. The bigger issue is that he sets up the history of Western philosophy as battles between art-as-creation and science-as-reason. He associates the former with the classical Greeks through to the thinkers of the enlightenment, and the latter with Nietzsche and his influences. He seems to believe that we have gone too far in the direction of the latter. However he never reconciles the two or even suggests such a reconciliation. This is a shame. The university is not all of life and if one believes that one might still learn and philosophize outside the university, one wants to hear Bloom talk about the art/science dichotomy, rather than throw up his hands in frustration that no one in the modern university appreciates it.As for a recommendation: if you like reading Nietzsche, you will like this. If you want a political diatribe (Wikipedia says that some people have described this book as starting the American "Culture Wars" -- yeah only for those people who did not actually rad the book) look elsewhere.Kindle version worked great.

As a physician I am in a privileged position, let into people's lives at perhaps their most vulnerable, and this book is a gut-punch. I am proud of the work I and my many talented and dedicated colleagues do, but we MUST not allow our professional bonds to be more important than our professional duty to protect and comfort our patients, or to overshadow the duty to our profession (and society) to weed out those who would violate that trust. This book is a strong reminder of why these things are true. 27+ years in medicine and I have never joined the AMA, in part because of their opposition to more effective oversight.

In this alarming and well written true story, James B. Stewart tells the tale of a psychopathic homicidal doctor and the bafflingly lax professional medical establishment that failed to properly monitor and halt his transgressions.Using a clear and engaging narrative style, Stewart presents a frightening portrait of Dr. Michael Swango’s trail of deceit and murder from Illinois to Ohio to Virginia, through South Dakota and New York, and ultimately to Africa. In the process, Stewart reveals the inherent—and ultimately dangerous—arrogance that permeates the medical profession. Throughout Swango’s career of poisoning and killing co-workers, girlfriends, and patients, concerns were raised about his behavior. Since many of these concerns came from female nurses and patients, the male-dominated bureaucracy of the American medical established all too readily dismissed—or even worse, excused—the allegations against Swango, a white Midwestern male. While Stewart himself merely implies the impact of institutionalized sexism (and, in the case of the murders in Zimbabwe, racism), it’s impossible to read this book without recognizing its fatal consequences. Both devoted and casual fans of true crime will enjoy (if that’s even the right word) this gripping book.

Factual story of a man who entered the medical profession with an obsession to watch people die. His early job as an EMT responding to major accidents fueled his fetish to watch people take their last breath. With his medical degree he was able to accomplish unnatural deaths mostly by the use of poison. While unexplained deaths seemed suspicious, the nurses and other doctors didn'twant to believe there could be a problem. Yet administrators would fire him for minor infractions just to remove him from the hospital where employed to make sure their reputation was not ruined in case the baseless allegations were true. He moved from location to locations and even to other countries where he was allowed to continue to practice his profession. It took years before he was investigated as a possible serial killer.

A great read.Swango is an American doctor who is suspected of killing up to 60 patients as a serial killer. He was not an Angel of Death type. He was a great admirer of serial killer Ted Bundy due to Bundy's intelligence and ability to fool so many people.Swango was attractive, fit, and very intelligent. He had boundless energy, which makes me wonder if he had mania/bipolar disorder besides being a psychopath and extreme narcissist.I also saw sadism in his personality. He loved violence and disasters.

Interesting and disillussioning story. The people who attempt to regulate the way we expect them to are hobbled by the legal system, and lawyers' professional ethics, especially those working for the government designed to protect us.Please read it. But you are not going to enjoy reading it.

This book chronicles the life of Michael Swango from his childhood until the present.Swango, later to become Dr. Swango is raised in a home without a father. His father, a military man, prefers duty in Viet Nam than opportunity to stay at home. His mother, though doting upon Swango, is not one to express emotional warmth. Oddly she seems to pay undue attention to his achievements, leading him emotionally starved but unduly attached to his outward achievements.Swango is at least outwardly, the All American success story. Good looking, he is a gifted student and sent to a private school, while his brothers are left to attend public schools. He later enters Medical School. But Swango is left emotionally scarred. He has a compulsive need to be in "control". Unlike a would-be cop or would-be business executive, Swango finds the ultimate control as a physician - perfectly in position to be in control of people's lives. The ultimate control is over life and death for Swango. By using poisons and various medications, he controls the fate of his victims by deciding who will live or die by unknowingly receiving intravenous doses of well, God knows what. But Dr. Swango for all outward appearances, is a shining success story, easily making a good impression on those who meet him, but not in a position to truly know him. He finishes medical school and secures a prestigious residency.Problems with Swango become evident early on. But such signs went largely unnoticed. That is to the powers that be. His peers couldn't help but see his peculiar preferences to be involved in life and death situations. As medical student he earns the nick name "Double O" Swango. Patients seem to mysteriously die shortly after contact with Swango. As evidence mounts that there is something desperately wrong with Dr. Swango, his supervising physicians discount the reports of his odd behavior by nursing students and patients. One of the most striking aspects of his story is the reaction of the faculty of the prestigious universities he works in. Being more concerned for their own reputations and legal liability they fail to take action that ensures the safety of the people they are supposed to serve. That perhaps the theme of the book: the medial community's reaction is naive at best and recklessly irresponsible at worst. But take into consideration the fact that Swango is the only known physician serial killer known in the past 100 or more years. Was the medical community prepared to see what is a rare occurrence in history? Perhaps the larger issue is just how well does the medical community police itself? Are they equipped to do it and prepared to take action when they need to? The book leaves these as questions to be answered by the reader though the author seems justifiably outraged.

Intriguing. Will leave you struck with disbelief regarding the reality of human depravity. Well written, well documented timelines and excellent use of resources. My favorite part of the author's writing style is when he switches to first person toward the end of the book. I am floored the wake of destruction that this doctor left in his path.

Review

“The Lie takes on material that's small in scope and thoroughly familiar: emotions we've all felt before. On the other hand, it's got the chutzpah to try and make us experience those feelings in a whole new way.” - NPR Books“A haunting little graphic novella... Parrish’s tactile paintwork conjures humans with hulking bodies and baseball heads, all of them wondering whether the messes they’re in are the result of mistakes they’ve made or some kind of perverse destiny they were always bound for.” - Vulture“Tommi Parrish’s excellent new graphic novel relentlessly interrogates issues of gender and sexuality, pointing out that strict binaries are mostly jerry-built and easily broken.” - PEN“With each hand-painted panel, author Tommi Parrish communicates an intense atmosphere and delves thoughtfully into the themes of queer desire, masculinity, fear, and the fading of past relationships.” - Eyes on Design“The Lie and How We Told It is one of the best graphic novels I’ve read in the past two years. ... To see Parrish's work culminate in such a magnificent graphic novel is both satisfying and invigorating.” - Sequential State“The Lie And How We Told It is a bold and confident statement of artistic intent that has elevated Parrish into the top tier of contemporary cartoonists.” - Four Color Apocalypse“Tommi Parrish managed to work some kind of magic in this book. ... It’s genuinely been a while since characters felt so real to me.” - Adventures in Poor Taste

P { margin-bottom: 0.08in; }A:link { } "The HyperDoc Handbook is an indispensable guide for any educator interested in effectively embracing and integrating HyperDocs into the learning process. Read this book. It's compelling, accessible and filled with tips and insights."Cindy JohansonExecutive Director, Edutopia“We all want our students to be creative and collaborative problem solvers who have a passion for inquiry and lifelong learning!  HyperDocs is a way to help students build these skills and in this book, the authors have laid out an easy to follow implementation strategy and how to guide to make the use of HyperDocs pain free and easy!”Jaime Casap, Google Education Evangelist "When I first saw the HyperDocs concept, I knew it was a game-changer. Teachers are looking for strategies to harness the potential of digital technologies, but through powerful pedagogy and practice. The HyperDoc Handbook gives educators a how-to guide to create authentic learning experiences - utilizing Google Apps - that allows them to shift their role from knowledge-disseminator to facilitator and guide. This allows teachers to personalize learning for students, while giving students the reigns to drive their own learning...while integrating technology in a meaningful way." Kelly Mendoza, Director of Professional Development, Common Sense Education“The HyperDoc Handbook provides a sensible and pedagogically-sound way to use Google Apps and online tools to create engaging lessons and units. The models and ideas presented can help you boost creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking in your classroom, while allowing students access to all the resources they need at the same time! It’s a win-win model!”Kathy Schrock, Educational Technologist, http://kathyschrock.net

I don't often write reviews on Amazon, however, this book is a GREAT resource. As a teacher in a district that uses Google Apps, this was one of the first books I read that gave me new ideas, instead of more of the same basic tips. It may only be 122 pages, but don't let that turn you away from purchasing this book. Many pages have valuable resources on it that require time to try them out and find what is best for you. Although I finished reading the text, I have a long way to go as far as exploring all the tools mentioned. I labeled a few things I thought would have a significant improvement on my instruction, and will start creating those HyperDocs for the next school year. I showed a few colleagues who also value google apps as a means to enhance instruction and they all asked if they could borrow the book. Immediately they commented on how much they loved the layout/format of the writing and tools. I had to say no because it is not a book that goes on a shelf when you finish reading it. Between the resources in this book, and Alice Keeler's book, I think the way myself and co-teacher implement google apps into our instruction will be more engaging for the students, and lead to higher student success in our class. Myself and Co-Teacher thank the authors for a well put together book. (One personal note: I generally purchase my books in the Kindle format, however, for this one I would recommend buying the physical copy)

This is THE book for any level teacher looking to learn how to easily weave all the pieces together in a well-packaged, strong, transformative 21st Century lesson design. Hyperdocs will engage learners with multi-layered, robust content. The Hyperdoc Handbook shows all teachers, coaches or administrators how to walk through the creation process with extensive reasoning, encouragement, step-by-step directions to build their own hyperdoc, numerous downloadable examples, tons of possible tech tools, extra tips & tricks, an most importantly - an open invitation to join the Teachers Give Teachers community. The Handbook will level up hyperdocs; the authors have explicitly focused on how the Four C's, ISTE Standards, DOK, and SAMR all need to be considered in the creation process. A summer must read!

I use Amazon regularly, but this is the first review I've ever made. I'm a teacher and read a lot of educational books. Usually they're based on the philosophy of education and are more designed to tell me how I should be doing things differently without any real applicable logistics. Not this book!!! This might be the best professional development book I have EVER read. There is a bit at the beginning about philosophy, but it's so full of actual lessons, ideas, resources to use that you can't help but feel inspired to try it out. I jumped in with both feet to make my first hyperdoc within only days of receiving this book. If you want to incorporate more blended learning into your classroom and feel that creative spark when you design something really new and engaging then buy this book!I was not paid or compensated to write this review. Another teacher told me about the book at a training and I bought it while I was sitting there. So glad I did.

The HyperDoc Handbook is one of those rare professional development books that truly will transform your teaching. This book shows you how to take your existing lessons and digital resources and combine them into a streamlined presentation that increases student engagement, accountability and agency. You will be provided with a myriad of resources along the way, most notably the Teachers Give Teachers site, which allows you to search for freely given HyperDoc lessons, customizable for your own classroom or Professional Learning Community. This site is truly an amazing collection of high quality learning resources. This book so inspired me that I signed up for the HyperDoc Bootcamp, taught by the authors. I highly recommend this course after reading this book because I was able to learn much more about HyperDocs and Google apps and extensions, like Read&Write, as part of a community of vibrant and generous educators.I highly recommend this book if you are looking to embark on a journey of learning that will positively impact all your future students and keep you organized in this age of information overload.

This focused, no-nonsense book is, refreshingly, not one of those "academic-only" reads. Instead, think technology-education's disruptive innovators meets education's mentoring practitioners in a friendly, useful read. It would be a true win if more ed-tech books of the future looked like this one: useful prose enhanced by a learning portal approach that provides great resources to help transform student learning opportunities both inside and outside of the classroom. Due to the online resources provided, I'm primarily a fan of the digital version (albeit the only version I read) as many useful templates, examples, lessons, apps, and links have been curated and await you.In short, this is a valuable resource for any educator seeking a practical, doable approach to providing evolving and engaging learning opportunities, or for either the advanced practitioner or an instructional technology leader looking for a unifying resource to share with others. The scope and adaptability of the gems offered in this work is a strong step in the right direction toward any educator's evolving professional practice.

I just finished the book and was disappointed that I spent that much on it. It is basically a collection of web tools and basics in how to use Google. I also am bothered at the end where they talk about giving teachers things they don't have to pay for, but the book was pricey.
