About the Author

Dr. McWilliam is the Siskin Endowed Chair of Research in Early Childhood Education, Development, and Intervention at Siskin Children’s Institute. He is also a professor of education at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and an adjoint professor of special education at Vanderbilt University. He has formerly been a professor of pediatrics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, a senior scientist at the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute, and a professor of education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. McWilliam’s research centers on infants, toddlers, and preschoolers with and without disabilities, with a specific focus on child engagement, service delivery models, and collaboration with families. He has provided consultation, training, and technical assistance across the United States and in some countries overseas on providing early intervention in natural environments and on the Engagement Classroom Model. His Routines-Based Interview (RBI) is a widely used method of assessing families’ needs and developing individualized family service plan (IFSP) outcomes and individualized education program (IEP) goals.

The author uses the book as a vehicle for promoting his Rountines-Based Interview (RBI ) shamelessly. I understand and have no problem with an author giving a plug to their products now and then. They have created something and are proud of it and it's merit ok. However, given Dr. McWilliam's credentials I expect and prefer a bit more professional restraint and objectivity. I already had bought his book because I believed he had some valuable information to share with me . His choice to go overboard with "selling" his other products negatively colored my view of his credibility and his book. I too believe in "family centeredness" and a "focus on functionality" and chose to buy and read his book to gain more knowledge about an area I am very interested in. I was very disappointed and somewhat angry because of all the professionals books I've read in my career I can't remember ever having a similar reaction. I would have kept these opinions to myself had Amazon not requested my input.

This book is a good resource overall. As a heads up, it is really more of a text book (which I did not realize when I ordered it). However, for a text book I actually thought it was a pretty easy and pleasant read! It is probably most useful for home-based therapists who want to provide their therapy through the child's existing daily routines and in his/her natural environment. Although it is written for EI professionals, it may also be a good resource for parents who want to carry over their child's therapy when the therapist is not there. It gives some good advice for identifying already naturally occurring learning opportunities, and how to maximize those opportunities. I also appreciate that this book provides quite a few templates and checklists that might be useful.

This is a must have resource for case managers and early childhood teachers.
