I literally know nothing about basketball, yet alone college bsaketball. With March madness, a friend recommended getting this book so I understood what all the fuss was about. I was hesitant about caring, about whether a book would suffice etc but needless to say, this book killed it. I loved the way the book started you off at the beginning and allowed your experience evolve with the book. It's really crazy to see how crazy american culture and basketball can be. I don't live or breathe it but this book changes that perspective. So many people, so many coaches, that are driven by the love of the game. It's cool to learn more about all of the coaches too, it's crazy how much coaches can drive a player. Highly recommend this book
This book is a master! If you know very little about college basketball, “Rising Above the Madness†will give you a brief history and overview to enable you to join in the conversation about the games. If you know all about college basketball, you will still learn details and stories about the top ten coaches (J Wooden, P Allen, A Rupp, D Smith, M Krzyzewsi, B Knight, J Tarkanian, J Boeheim, L Carnesecca, J Calhoun) that were the best of college basketball (photo). Each chapter provides a biography that gives the key as to what drives the coach. His childhood is discussed and you learn how that made the coach who he was. We learn their strategies and how they interacted with their players. The book is well researched, and the research is turned into engaging stories – the stories that applaud the coach’s accomplishments and make college basketball come alive during March Madness.
I feel so much more invested in my bracket now that I have a background and a history to put to some of the top teams. I have really enjoyed learning about the early careers and team-building strategies of the top coaches. As a North Carolina resident, I especially liked the biographies of Dean Smith and Coach K. These really added a human face to the rivalry that surrounds me every winter and spring.This book is also written at a reading level that would be appropriate for high schoolers, so I think it would be an excellent gift to inspire a young person who loves basketball and is interested in learning more about leadership. Each biography contains a lot of good lessons about how to maximize your own skills to find success.
