The title might hint that this is only for someone dealing with a large legacy code base. But another way to look at this book is that each section:1. Starts with an 'anti-pattern' ... how not to write code.2. Ends with how that should have been written.3. Shows how to transform '1' to '2'.'1' and '2' alone applies to all serious software developers writing systems larger than, say 1000 lines.The book gives the impression that '1' occur only after code is modified multiple times. But after working 25yrs in multiple companies / teams, I know that these mistakes are is very common in many greenfield projects as well.

This is a 5 star book, I am giving 4 star only because on kindle version of the book code is not readable. Please please fix the code issue and update the kindle book. This awesome books deserves a better kindle version.

This book is a bit old. It is the first, or among the first, which addresses the refactoring issue. However, everything in it is relevant today.At the beginning and at the end you will find articles by various authors (Fowler, Beck, Opdyke, Roberts and Brant):* Refactoring , first example.* Principles of refactoring .* Bad smells in code .* Building Tests.* Toward a Catalog of Refactorings .* Big Refactorings .* Refactoring , Reuse , and Reality .* Refactoring Tools.* Putting It All Together.In the middle will find a great catalog of small transformations that define the steps to do the refactoring. This catalog, though simple is very important as explained in the first chapters.Fowler clearly explains why refactoring, some clues to identify the most important issues (code smells) to refactor in order to improves the design, and the catalog of transformations that are commonly used to solve each code smells.Dependending your experience and knowledge of software craftsmanship, you will surely perceive it more or less as a simple topic, but that makes it no less important.It is a fantastic book. It is one of the books that every software developer in the industry should read. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is that it is not a truly revealing book. The items inside are all very basic and simple. You should not expect anything astonishing and the first impression is that all of it is obvious, but it is explained in an exceptional way and the catalog created by Fowler is really great.

Refactoring: Improving the Design of Existing Code is one of those amazing books that every professional developer should have on their book shelf. The bulk of this book is a catalog of refactorings, but there is more to it as I will explain below.In case you aren't aware of what refactoring is, I'll give you Fowlers definition."Refactoring is the process of changing a software system in such a way that it does not alter the external behavior of the code yet improves its internal structure." For the most part this means cleaning up your existing - yet working - code. It involves anything from renaming a method to be more concise with the purpose of that method, to breaking up switch statements into a polymorphic structure. There are many different techniques used to refactor your code, which is what you learn in this book.Right off the bat Fowler throws you into a small sample application that is poorly designed. He then takes you through a few different refactoring techniques that improve the design of this simple application. Right from the start you see how effective refactoring can be. From there he goes into topics such as how to detect "bad smells" in code. This chapter is particularly informative and entertaining. You also learn a little bit about testing. After the introductory chapters you begin to dig into a deep catalog of refactorings. Each one is named. Like design patterns - naming the refactoring and building a vocabulary really helps in communicating thoughts and ideas.The catalog of refactorings is extremely useful. They are structured so that each refactoring has a name, a motivation, the mechanics and a simple example. This is very effective. As I said earlier, the name is useful because it helps build your programming vocabulary and it helps in communicating thoughts and ideas. The motivation explains why the refactoring should be done and when it should/shouldn't be used. The mechanics provide a step-by-step description of how to carry out the refactoring and the example shows a small example of the refactoring in use. All examples are written in Java 1.1.Although the examples are written in Java the book is still very good for any developer. Developers that have never written a line of code in Java, C++, C#, or anything similar may have a little bit of a tougher time working through this book. Luckily most examples are very small and simple so even if you fall into this category you shouldn't have too much of a learning curve. Some of the code is a bit outdated and can be done a bit better now-a-days but what do you expect? This book was written 8+ years ago! Times have changed. The ideas are still very relevant though, which is what makes this book so timeless.Martin Fowler books are always a joy to read. His writing style is humorous, yet often very blunt and to the point. Just like UML Distilled, he is able to communicate a lot of ideas into a very short amount of space - the book is a bit dense in other words, which is very good in my opinion. Martin Fowler does not beat around the bush and he has very strong opinions on certain topics. Unlike a lot of books you read, he actually writes with personality. I have a hard time putting his books down. Here is an example of the type of verbiage he uses...On how comments can be a "bad smell":"Don't worry; we aren't saying that people shouldn't write comments. In our olfactory analogy, comments aren't a bad smell; indeed they are a sweet smell. The reason we mention comments here is that comments often are used as a deodorant." - Martin Fowler. Here he is talking about how people use comments to hide bad code, or "bad smells".I highly recommend this book. If you are a professional developer or plan on becoming one then click the "Buy Now" button without second thought. This is one of those rare books worth its weight in gold - I would spend $100.00 on a book like this if I had to.

Do you want to know why your indicators don't work for you but they do for someone else? Have you heard the expression "Price action is pure?" That's what this book is all about.Open a chart, e.g. a daily candlebar chart of AAPL. Then apply Bollinger Bands, then moving averages (SMA/EMA), then Stochastics, then MACD. Oh my... What are you looking at now? Exactly!!! You're looking at the indicators while you need to be looking at the chart itself, the patterns, the candle types, e.g. dojis, hammers, etc. The chart generally tells you everything you need to know, e.g. who's in control: bulls or bears, where the institutional buying / selling pressure is, important S&R levels, and so on.This is not the easiest book to read. Every chapter usually has a chart followed by lots of text explain it, so you'll be going back and forth between the chart and the text. The author recommends printing out the charts separately and has those charts on his website.That being said, it's still the best book I've seen so far on price action and it has helped me a lot.Five stars easily.

Incredible course. Months to capture it's truths. Brooks' mind as an eye surgeon prepared him well to transfer his analytic mind to know/and write this tome of truths about day trading. It will be many years before something matches this if ever. This said, I might urge YOU dear reader to invest in the course on line 1st, even though it's more expensive. $249/ It's so much easier to absorb, and navigate through the many "modules" of learning with the reinforcement visually seen and explained. Brooks explains calmly, and soothingly, with simple language about complex ideas that build on themselves. Done in well thought out sequences with ample charts, the downloaded course reinforces what the books present, and with the 1st of the 2 purchases, perhaps the download method is easier to tackle. I have both resources, and now with 6 months into the purchase know I have many more months of information to glean, and probably years of benefits from it all as well as refer to. Thank you Mr. Brooks for your contribution.

Sailor Dunc has waded the brooks of the first two books of the "trilogy". Be prepared for an incredible amount of repetition and overlap. Repeating to hammer essential messages is fine - but readers know this is beyond that. The book is supposedly on trends but has a presentation style that does not. It starts as if out of the blue, meanders all over the place and the destinations are rarely in sight. Reminds me of the time a few weeks ago out in the fog. And yet, like then, there are some brilliant landscapes when the fog lifts, so read on.While not (at all) the first to focus on detailed price action, as claimed in the promo hype, Brooks may be the first to write such an in-depth treatise based mainly on Emini 5 minute bars. Most of us find interpreting and scalping in such an arena too expensive, noisy and frenetic for the long haul. Price action patterns there MUST have different meaning than say it's own daily or weekly time frames and surely compared to currencies, a commodity exchange or daily stock markets. Discussion of "openings" and "closing" of little intra-day bars when a market was in fact OPEN has to be taken with grains of sea salt. Yet the remarkable, fascinating thing, is how much predictive (and un-predictive) price-action behaviour DOES hold true across time frames, markets and history. Despite scale and other real differences in what is going on, trading is what it is, does what it does and as a result, looks like what it looks like. Except for a go at SPY you won't see this sailor tacking intraday Emini waters. But no matter your domain or time scale, if you do trade actively on price action, you will quickly recognize much behaviour and the relevance of everything covered (and repeatedly re-covered).His explanation of MOTIVES behind the moves range from frank realism to utterly fanciful. He explains, as precious few do, how the automated algorithms behind the Big Boys' programs (from HFT to long term movers), now dominate the action most everywhere (I suppose you could escape THEM by impersonating shark food in the small penny stock ponds - what could go wrong?). He also speaks realistically of the countless forces, reasons and reasoning that mush together into the unknowable blending of dynamic markets. Yet other times he lapses into goofy explanations: Some little move on the chart was because "Everyone" knew there was now a 60% probability of a measured move from the 5 minute signal bar that just crossed The moving average" kind of hokum. There is also the usual simplistic "Bull vs Bear" conventions ad-nauseam. Brooks however teaches that his and anyone's tautology are conjecture. Their accuracy in the end, irrelevant. If they help you make sense and cents, good enough. Whatever floats your boat. What matters most out on quick moving water is not WHY the wind is thus but what you DO about it. His rants against newscasters' compulsive need to attach "reasons" and "expert" TV pundit's predictions is fun. Summarized in the scientific definition of news in the glossary: "Useless information".His coverage on how active traders RESPOND to what is happening is usually straight up realism. In this first book, HOW to trade these common technical setups WISELY is frankly explained much better or more succinctly elsewhere. Such as in the reduced to essentials, carefully nuanced, much more terminology restrained prose of Adam Grimes. But, no matter. In Brooks there is UNCOMMON attitude and appreciation towards setups in general not often seen in print anywhere.Reviewing "Trades About the Happen" by Weis, I lamented they never quite do. No one can EVER fault Brooks on that score! An unfair parody of Brooks would paraphrase him as declaring all bars and all moves (yes even at the 5 minute level) are, at one and the same time, their own trends, trading ranges, pullbacks and breakouts. And should be traded accordingly! And are. Left for you (with more help promised in the later 2 books) is the task of judging when the all important "trader's equation" as he puts it, justifies YOUR participation.The charts behind the many bar-by-bar commentaries in all 3 books are made available online at Wiley. There they can be referenced onscreen or printed. This eliminates the page flipping that eventually dooms such discussions in other works. Nice.Despite foggier than needed terminology and the dubious value of SOME of the classical TA concepts coached, I would have given this first of the trio 4 stars. Pretty good in this genre. A star must come off however for that editing. The entire "trilogy", honed down to 1 book would have had a shot of being a true blockbuster. Trilogizing it may be a Wiley marketing ploy but it actually obscures the author's value. A mass left bloated is just harder to digest properly. Perhaps keeping to the budget, time and energy available, Brooks did his utmost ("Damn it Jim, I am a Trader not an Editor"). Though not for novices (mainly because of these difficulties), the actual messages are not rocket science. He is actually a good writer and there much trading wisdom shared here. I would not let obscurity challenges deter you from exploring these Brooks. Having repeat feelings of deja vous is hardly the worst thing to befall one in trading lit. Take notes of new ground and use your own radar.See shorter (over lapping but higher rated) review of book 2. Book 3 - in the mail. Sail on!

Almost didn't get this book after seeing the review that it ends on a cliffhanger... it doesn't ... not in the sense that I use cliffhanger anyway. As an analogy w/o giving any spoilers, the "cliffhanger" is akin to the shot at the end of XMen: Last Stand where Magneto moves a metal chess piece or Xavier speaking through a formerly comatose hospital patient. Doesn't really affect the main story but does T-up the next one quite well.it is a "classic part 2" though in that the battle is won but the war still rages on. So... if that's too much of a cliffhanger for you... may be better to wait till #3. (it wasn't for me...)On a grander level, I'm kinda wondering where Mr. Reynolds is going with this. For the most part all the meta are restricted to Earth... or at least our solar system. So since it's plausible that aliens dropped the meta bands they can do so w/o risking retaliation from us as the meta bands don't allow us to leave the solar system and don't increase our technological knowledge.I doubt these themes will come up in book 3, but it would be an interesting world to continue to write stories in, especially if those stories get to these issues. HOWEVER... book 2 comes dangerously close to making that a hard transition. There are 4 key things Mr Reynolds does that if the bands were supposed to be some sort of self-contained test of the human race then we're chipping at the walls of that self-containment. I can't really go into 3 of those as ... spoilers... but the 4th... some metas can shrink themselves down to the molecular level. (They are hired by rich people to cure their cancer.) However, a much more interesting use of a molecule sized meta is to help jump-start a nanotechnology revolution. Making the first nano machine is hard... making the 2nd not so much... making the first with the help of a meta... pretty easy.

... there is something called research and sometimes you should allow someone who knows things about stuff you don't look over that part of your manuscript.Nothing breaks suspension of disbelief as getting details completely and utterly wrong, better to make names up than insert embarrassing errors.The prose is better, the plot holes fewer the world-building a bit more consistent, but still there are these endless internal monologues.If the writing was a but more lively this would deserve three stars, but as it is now all its faults stills denies that.

I really love this series. As a fan of the superhero genre its easy to say that no new ground has been tread, but Tom Reynolds manages to make everything seem fresh. I was worried after the first book that this would devolve into YA drivel, but was pleasantly surprised at the development of Connor. Even though he's 16 you don't get the sense that he's dealing with teenage angst or hormones (most of the time I forgot he was that young until it was mentioned). He comes across as a hero who has really accepted his burden regardless of cost. This allows him to become more than the what we normally get from a follow up novel where the hero over examines if its worth it. The power system lays a unique groundwork for problems and solutions that kept me reading from cover to cover. I liked the ending. Some people didn't, but as a second act it fits right into the universe and set up more books. (Hooray)

I desperately wanted to like this book (along with the first one).The concept was an interesting idea; for the uninitiated, the series essentially asks the question, "What would happen if mysterious, silver bracelets of unknown origin started showing up by the hundreds and granting amazing and varying abilities to the different people to find them?" The concept is both practical and intriguing. It's practical because it gives you a relatively unique reason to have multiple people (heroes, villains, and the morally ambiguous in-between) running around with super powers. It's intriguing because the mysterious origin can go in so many directions and be easily explored as a sub-plot throughout one or more stories. Are these metallic bands part of some massive, international conspiracy to test new technology are humans? Are they some sort of divine gift, or perhaps provided by aliens as a means of making humans strong enough to be enslaved as military fodder for their own war-time agendas? There are any number of directions the concept could have gone.Unfortunately, the author fails to take the concept anywhere. It seems every character in the book has given up on exploring the nature of the bracelets before they even begin. So where it could have been a multifaceted mystery to gradually uncover, instead it gets thrown at the reader as "This is why all these people have powers," and then forgotten about.The other problem I had throughout the book (and the first suffered from this as well, though to a much lesser degree) is the meandering, directionless nature of the plot. It isn't until about 75% of the way into the book that the plot actually feels like it's going anywhere. Up until that point, it feels largely like a day-in-the-life-of-this-hero sort of story, rehashing all the same tired hero-problems that we've seen before (a double life is difficult, it sucks keeping secrets from your best friend and girlfriend, etc.). In addition, the author has a bad habit of introducing a big problem with little preamble, and then ignoring the problem and leaving it largely unresolved.For details on what I'm talking about above, read on but beware of some spoilers.*******SOME MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD********Regarding the meandering plot, there's a plot beat that does go beyond the day-in-the-life type action around a quarter of the way into the story, in which our hero accompanies a team to capture a high-profile businessman who may or may not have powers himself. You might call this an inciting incident, as it sets the ball rolling for what seems like might be a big showdown (which isn't, but more on that later). However, the next event that ties into this one at all doesn't come until about three-fourths of the way into the book, and ends with the hero as little more than a bystander.Then there's the issue of unresolved issues. There are many, many things that are brought up and left unresolved throughout the story. I understand that this is meant to be part of a series, but it feels less like a "to be continued" and more like "oops, I forgot I started that sub-plot." For example, the hero has one or two run-ins with his best friend where his friend, usually the stereotypical fun and light-hearted side-kick type, is moody and unhappy. Then while out fighting crime, out of the blue the hero is confronted with a group we've heard nothing of earlier (called the Blanks, for reasons I can't remember, and they're anti-meta vigilante's apparently), and lo and behold, the one member of the Blanks to get his mask knocked off in the scuffle happens to the hero's best friend. So what happens next? Absolutely nothing. We get a few lines inside our hero's head about how he can't believe or understand why his best friend belongs to this group, and the issue is forgotten.********SLIGHTLY BIGGER SPOILERS*********The ending of the book not only left a number of major threads completely unresolved, but introduced a new one at the last second, as if the author thought the audience needed yet another unresolved story line as an incentive to pick up the next book.First, several meta's show up demanding all other meta's turn in their bracelets or they'll destroy them by force. You'd think this was a setup for a fun showdown between them and our hero, but instead the supposedly powerless Midnight, our hero's mentor, suddenly out of the blue not only turns out to have meta bands himself, but he also suddenly has a robotic suit of armor powered by one of his meta bands, and he goes up against the villains himself. The most of the battle the audience gets is seeing Midnight and the villains throw each other around a bit while the hero gets the much less interesting responsibility of evacuating the meta-prison that they're fighting around. And not only do we miss the fight (since the hero isn't in it), but we don't even learn how the fight turns out, or who comes out on top.Instead of our hero fighting three powerful villains, our hero instead dukes it out over a few pages with a fellow heroin as the two have a disagreement over whether to release the dangerous meta-inmates on the city or let them stay and die at the hands of the villains. And that fight itself leaves some unresolved threads, as the hero falls unconscious from the heroin using some strange, unseen power (which is never explained), and wakes up to find the inmates gone to who-knows-where and doing who-knows-what.Lastly, our hero teleports out of there badly damaged from his brief and less-than-thrilling fight with the heroin, landing in his brother's apartment and unmasking himself just in time for his brother's random girlfriend, who showed up exactly once before, to catch him, but lo and behold (notice how things keep happening out of the blue?), she's not who she said she was (anybody with any sense saw that part coming, at least) and is actually a recruiter for some sort of program or school, which they want the hero to join.So, we're left with no idea what happened to the villains who were trying to destroy other meta's, and no idea what happened to Midnight who was fighting them. We're left with no idea what happened with his best friend, either why he joined the Blanks or whether or not he's still with them. And we're left with no idea what this 'school program' is, who is running, why they're running it, or whether they're good or bad (or somewhere in between). I don't mind cliffhangers when you've made it clear there will be a sequel, but the author treats these threads less like mysteries to be solved later and more like things we shouldn't bother caring about.All we really have are a series of three or four big events that seem to occur out of nowhere and with little or no buildup, and no resolution. It's as if the author was writing random day-to-day events for the hero and thought, "Hey, such-and-such would be a cool thing to have happen," and so the author drops that event in without warning. Then, before bothering to resolve any of these events, he got tired of writing and just published what he had already.*******END SPOILERS********Another big issue I had was the development (or lack thereof) of the characters. We really aren't given any reasons for why the characters are doing what they're doing. For our main hero, Conner/Omni, we never find out why he feels the need to be a hero. Even in the first book, this isn't an issue that's ever covered. He acts as though having these powers makes him obligated to be a hero, but neither he nor anybody else asks "Why?" Then there's his mentor, Midnight; I understand that he's meant to be mysterious and formidable both physically and mentally, but we don't get even the slightest hint as to how he developed his skills/intellect, or where his apparent unlimited resources come from. And like the hero, we're never given any hint as to why he does what he does. He's basically like Batman with all the skills and cunning, not to mention gadgets to suit any occasion, but without any apparent motive for fighting crime.On top of not having any explanation for why the characters are doing what they're doing, there also isn't a single character that grows in any way throughout the story. Every single character is exactly the same in the end as they were in the beginning. The only one who comes close to having any character development is Conner's best friend, but that's only in comparison to the first novel; In the first book, he's the happy and peppy sidekick, while the in second book, all we see is him being moody and angry. And for as little interaction and affect his character had, it may has well have just been a different character from the first book altogether.IN CONCLUSION . . .You might be wondering at this point why I've even given the book two stars. The truth is, the initial concept was definitely a strong one. Also, though I don't know for sure, I get the sense this book was probably self published (Amazon lists the publisher as "Leonard & Calyer" but the only publications I can find under that imprint are the two books in this series). And while I don't typically like double standards, I have to admit that this is definitely above the average in quality compared to other self published books. There are some typos/grammatical errors (more so than a traditionally published book would have) but not so many that it becomes a distraction.Besides, part of me is hoping that the author improves his storytelling abilities before taking a crack at the next book in the series. Most of the issues I have really boil down to a single flaw; Reynolds has issues looking at the big picture, to see how all the pieces fit together. If he can get a bitter grip on piecing these disparate events together in a more organic way, while finding at least one purpose to drive the story and build on to a dramatic conclusion, I think he could turn into a marvelous writer.

This tafsir is very detailed. Some of the sentences do not end with periods as they should when writing in English but that is a very small thing considering the detail of the content that I needed in providing an understanding of things I thought I understood. It is very in depth with a lot of background information.

The Tafsir by Ibn Kathir is very useful to help explain each ayat or verse. This book is a wonderful research source to increase a person's knowledge of the first part of the Holy Qur'an. I recommend this book in particular to converts to Islam.

Very nice print. Arabic text is very clear.

I love this collection. I purchase them one at a time. As a need them for lecture class. I don't buy the whole thing all at once cause it would over load my brain, heart, and kindle fire.

I have read and thoroughly enjoyed books 1 thru 4 of the series, then passed them on to RVing friends in South Carolina. In return, they just recently gifted me with books 5 thru 9! OK, so I'm 82 years old and not one of the youngsters these books by Betty Birney slants them to but they are just FUN - FUN - FUN reads! My SC friends figure that they will pass them on to their church Pre-school classes. So, as I pass each of these volumes back to them, I imagine they will be going that route also. Back to Youngsters! Yeah! Go Humphrey!

I read Humphrey to my son (age 8 & 1/2) every night I have him. Out loud, each chapter is about 20 minutes. The stories are fun/engaging and have great messages.My only complaint is that the author doesn’t use the Oxford comma. :-)I’m looking forward to the next story.I would love to see Humphrey in a movie or TV show. The books are that good.

Humphrey is one of those characters that will entertain young readers, and parents. I love reading with my son. These books are so fun and have such great stories to tell. Betty G. Birney is an excellent writer and knows how to keep a child's interest in reading. Excellent series!

Son loves this series. His first grade teacher started to read them to the kids in class. I like that they cover some life lessons in a format my son likes. Entertaining enough for me to read while he is learning to read.

This book describes the theory of Multiple Intelligences (MI) and was written in 1983 by its developer: Howard Gardner. According to him, there is no such concept as 'intelligence' but many fields in which you can be more or less intelligent. These 'intelligences' are basically seven: linguistic, musical, logical-mathematical, spatial, bodily-kinesthetic and personal. Each of them is developed to a certain degree in all human beings, except in those who are impaired due to an accident or a genetic disease. And these are particularly the cases that Gardner uses to prove his theory, by gathering data of individuals that, for example, in spite of being autistic, show an incredible musical talent or those individuals with meager abilities in most areas but display from early childhood an ability to calculate very rapidly and accurately.Of course that this approach challenges the widely accepted (in the US mostly) IQ scores, because it shows that these tests focus only in one of the multiple intelligences,logical-mathematical in this case, and not all. So, they reach to a wrong conclusion of the individual's potential.

This book does a great job of not only presenting the idea of intelligence transcending the IQ barrier, but also of presenting Gardner's concepts of intelligence, I would, however, expand the feild and add more intelligence types myself. Though a bit of a technical read this is definitely worth the time.

A pretty clear exposition of the theory that time is but a human artifact and that we need to move beyond the concept to hope to understand the universe. Not dense but does require close reading.

I started reading this book looking for ideas on an MS thesis. The original plan was to look at using Multiple Intelligence Theory to modify a classroom setting and improve student engagement. While I do not think this is practical for a Masters thesis after reading the book, it has provided me with great ideas and lead me to a much better research project than the original one.

Well written SCHOLARLY book. Not really for the layman just wanting some good info. But interesting none the less.

For several years I thought of things that are studied by the howard gardner " Frames of Mind" So far the book has been more than I expected, and makes parents think about what they have to teach their kids at home, and how to realize the different types of perspectives towards dealing with children. A very important trait is the defenition of theory and hypothesis, intresting that the MI is known as a theory with so many people antagonizing with it.kids have an amazing potential waiting to be revealed and the only way to do it is to understand personally all the "Frames " that form your children hidden capacity and potential.When you read the book you realize and understand a lot of reactions and the effect of your knoledge over their learning skills.The book is oriented to teachers, but who could better teach our own children than us.

A lot of information that I have to think about. The first part is very technical but the reading on how different minds are tuned in to different abilities it is highly recommend for Early Childhood development students.
